"Many problems face the designer who wants to present job information in check-list form. Perhaps the major problem is that of condensing complex job information into the abbreviated form. Another important problem involves how best to lay out check-lists so as to maximize their effectiveness on the job. This guide is intended to help alleviate these problems by providing a handbook of background information and general principles for the guidance of the designer. The purpose and function of check-list publications are discussed, and a general concept for design is advanced. A method for analyzing and determining the essential information requirements of complex procedures is presented, and a systematic method for condensing these requirements into check-list items is proposed. Specific recommendations pertaining to organization, layout, and legibility of check-list publications are made."--Abstract.

The results of this study indicate that further research, development, and testing are needed for many of the suggestions in which the soundness may not be self-evident. The information in this report, though tentative in many of its practical implications, suggest if adopted, improvements over certain of the existing practices in the development of job instructions for Air Force personnel. Further development and evaluation of principles for effective presentation of job instructions for maintenance personnel has been undertaken, and can be expected to result in added specificity and refinements for certain procedures described in the present report.
