This Guide Specification establishes the design provisions for bridges crossing navigable waterways to minimize their susceptibility to damage from vessel collisions. The purpose of the provisions is to provide bridge components with a reasonable resistance capacity against vessel collision. The provisions specified are design values only and should not be interpreted as covering all conceivable cases of vessel collision.

Accident records show that sooner or later hindrances near a waterway will be hit by ships, be it navigation marks, bridge structures, reefs or shallows. With this background modelling and analysis of ship collisions to bridge structures have an increasing importance as the basis for rational decision making in connection with planning, design and construction of bridges over navigable waters. The International Symposium on Ship Collision Analysis focuses on advances in accident analysis, collision prevention and protective measures. The publication Ship Collision Analysis, Proceedings of the 1998 International Symposium, presents the papers of international experts in ship collision analysis and structural design. The contributions give the state of the art and point to future development trends with in the focus areas.

The 8th International Conference on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics (ICPMG2014) was organised by the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems at the University of Western Australia under the auspices of the Technical Committee 104 for Physical Modelling in Geotechnics of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. This quadrennial conference is the traditional focal point for the physical modelling community of academics, scientists and engineers to present and exchange the latest developments on a wide range of physical modelling aspects associated with geotechnical engineering. These proceedings, together with the seven previous proceedings dating from 1988, present an inestimable collection of the technical and scientific developments and breakthroughs established over the last 25 years. These proceedings include 10 keynote lectures from scientific leaders within the physical modelling community and 160 peer-reviewed papers from 26 countries. They are organised in 14 themes, presenting the latest developments in physical modelling technology, modelling techniques and sensors, through a wide range of soil-structure interaction problems, including shallow and deep foundations, offshore geotechnics, dams and embankments, excavations and retaining structures and slope stability. Fundamental aspects of earthquake engineering, geohazards, ground reinforcements and improvements, and soil properties and behaviour are also covered, demonstrating the increasing complexity of modelling arising from state-of-the-art technological developments and increased understanding of similitude principles. A special theme on education presents the latest developments in the use of physical modelling techniques for instructing undergraduate and postgraduate students in geotechnical engineering.

Timely, authoritative, extremely practical--an exhaustive guide tothe nontheoretical aspects of bridge planning and design. This bookaddresses virtually all practical problems associated with theplanning and design of steel and concrete bridge superstructuresand substructures. Drawing on its author's nearly half-century as abridge designer and engineer, it offers in-depth coverage of suchcrucial considerations as selecting the optimum location andlayout, traffic flow, aesthetics, design, analysis, construction, current codes and government regulations, maintenance andrehabilitation, and much more. * Offers in-depth coverage of all the steps involved in performingproper planning and design with comparative analyses of alternativesolutions * Includes numerous examples and case studies of existing bridgesand important projects underway around the world * Features a time-line history of bridge building from pre-Romantimes to the present * Summarizes key technical data essential to bridgeengineering * Supplemented with 200 line drawings and photos vividlyillustrating all concepts presented * Comprehensive coverage of CAD planning, design, and analysistechniques and technologies

Road and bridge networks in OECD countries are ageing and substantial funds are needed for repair and rehabilitation. Underwater or underground damage to bridge substructures is often invisible, inaccessible, and hard to assess. A variety of measures and technologies for bridge substructures has proven practically effective despite difficult geological and environmental conditions. This report catalogs actual damage and defects of bridge substructures and provides several examples of inspection, repair, and strengthening technologies. It proposes measures to protect investment capital while insuring low operational costs. It is a resource book for policy makers and administrators responsible for bridge management. "The provisions of these Specifications are intended for the design, evaluation and rehabilitation of both fixed and movable highway bridges. Mechanical, electrical, and special vehicular and pedestrian safety aspects of movable bridges, however, are not covered. Provisions are not included for bridges used solely for railway, rail transit or public utilities. For bridges not fully covered herein, the provisions of these Specifications mat be applied, as augmented with additional design criteria where required. These specifications are not intended to supplant proper training or the exercise of judgment by the Designer, and state only the minimum requirements necessary to provide for public safety. The Owner or the Designer may require the sophistication of design or the quality of materials and construction to be higher than the minimum requirements. The concept of safety through redundancy and ductility, and protection against scour and collision are emphasized. The design provisions of these Specifications employ the Load and Resistance Factor Design, LRFD, methodology. The factors have been developed from the theory of reliability based upon current statistical knowledge of loads and structural performance. Methods of analysis, other than those included in previous Specifications, and the modelling techniques inherent in them are included, and their use is encouraged. The commentary is not intended to provide a complete historical background concerning the development of these, or previous Specifications, nor is it intended to provide a detailed summary of the studies and research data reviewed in formulating the provisions of the Specification. However, references to some of the research data are provided for those who wish to study the background material in depth. The commentary directs attention to other documents that provide suggestions for carrying out the requirements and intent of these Specifications. However, those documents and this commentary are not intended to be a part of these Specifications."--Page1-1.
