The investigation shows expectations of international students in Germany (GER) and the United States of America (US) with a focus on cultural diversity management (CDM). Furthermore, it gives suggestions to companies in order to become more attractive as international employers in the long run. In a first step, the research objectives are determined, followed by a definition of the main terms of diversity management (DM) and CDM and hypotheses are developed. Then, an online survey among international students in GER and also international students in the US was conducted. The results, deriving from 318 participants, are described and analyzed in the study. Finally, recommendations for companies on CDM are presented. The main findings describe that DM is less prominent among international students in GER than among internationals in the US (with 54 compared to 40 percent). Besides, the dimensions of nationality and gender seem to be very important for international students. Language courses, further support and culturally mixed teams are considered as most important expectations towards CDM in both countries. As further expectations comments to the topics equality, support, integration and acceptance, understanding and awareness as well as good working atmosphere were given. As critical aspects regarding CDM in GER mainly language barriers are described. The study gives further proof that GER as well as the US are considered as attractive countries to work and study worldwide. However, more than half of the participating students perceived difficulties regarding the search for a job in both countries. This work shall contribute further information to the implementation of cultural diversity for companies as well as providing new insights for researchers and universities into the topic of CDM. Thus it might be interesting for international students, HR managers, diversity officers, managers and other employees.

International students living in Australia encounter a wide range of challenges outside the classroom. In addition to the transition from one educational institution to another, international students relocating to Australia are faced with a range of trials and tribulations, some trivial and straightforward and some significant and complicated. Australian education providers play a key role in helping international students negotiate these challenges to ensure that their experience of life here is rich and rewarding. ISANA is keen to contribute to the further improvement of student experience by promoting the good work that is being done in institutions across Australia. In July 2009 the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations commissioned ISANA to conduct a research project on 'Good Practice in Enhancing the Social Dimension of International Student Experience On and Off Campus'. This project set out to canvass the views of Australian education providers in order to enunciate a set of good practice principles for international student support services. After an extensive review of the literature, interviews were conducted with 30 people involved in key roles in international student support in a wide range of educational institutions and related organisations. The interviews sought to understand the level and type of support that interviewees considered was appropriate for their institution to provide at this point in time. Numerous examples of good practice, along with examples of service delivery which was considered sub-standard or exemplary were elicited. Drawing on the literature and these interviews, a list of principles were developed that aim to encapsulate current expectations of good practice across the sector in an accessible manner. The key finding from this study was that the level of support for international students, described by the institutions and organisations we consulted, far exceeds the minimum legal requirements across all of the service areas covered. Clearly, most Australian education providers have a long-standing commitment to ensuring international students? welfare, and many are enhancing the level of support provided in light of rising expectations of students and their families, governments and the broader community. However, the significant gap between the levels of service documented in this report and the minimum standards set out in the ESOS National Code 2007 is concerning, as this situation allows providers who lack a strong commitment to student welfare to operate legally while providing a level of care that would appear to be below community expectations. This report illustrates the gap between minimum registration requirements and accepted good practice across the industry in nine areas of international student support. This point is highly pertinent to the review of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act. The findings of this report suggests that the minimum standards of student support set out in the ESOS National Code 2007 could be strengthened significantly without imposing additional regulatory burdens on the majority of providers who are concerned for the best interests of students. The benefit of such strengthening would be to ensure that every student receives a level of support that better reflects industry standards and community expectations. In the course of the research for this project, it became apparent that international student services are currently in a state of fluidity in many institutions, with the ongoing search for more effective ways to deliver services currently trending towards integrated services for international and domestic students where possible. This shift has aroused concern among some staff in some institutions, but was beyond the scope of this study. Similarly, the location of international student service functions within institutions varies widely, with responsibilities of different units continuing to evolve. A consistent finding in our investigation was the requirement of all staff involved in international student support to have a high level of training in both counselling skills and in the regulations which govern provision of education for overseas students. In turn, it is recognized that there is a need to support staff to consistently update skills and knowledge to better provide for international students. A very encouraging observation was the extensive sharing of expertise between institutions that the project encountered, which is facilitated by professional development opportunities, formal and informal professional networks, dissemination of case studies through conferences and publications, and staff mobility between institutions. Project Report from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Communication, grade: A, The Hague University, course: Master in International Communication, language: English, abstract: When students are traveling to study abroad, they may face different issues such as loneliness, isolation, discrimination that may affect their academic performance and cause stress and mental health problems directly or indirectly. Di Tommaso and Spinner found out that integration into social networks is the best predictor of lower levels of social loneliness. Universities provide support for international students and it is intended to facilitate an optimal (from the point of view of the universities) academic and social adjustment, however, causing boring and lonely social life ‘outside the classroom’ and feeling a lack of belonging contribute to their sense of alienation in the host society. Due to the heavy study load and stress and because of lack of time, international students tend to have more in-door activities. Because of the developed technologies and internet, most of them prefer to communicate through social media: especially when they encounter problems in their daily life, they tend to search solutions via social channels on internet. Moreover, the media channels that The Hague University of Applied Sciences (hereinafter HHS) uses now seems not to be adequate for integration. HHS uses media tools such as blackboard and emails to communicate with the students, and students could theoretically build up certain conversation via blackboard. However, students consider both channels as “formal” channels that are one-way communication channels instead of desired social channels which is two-way communication. In other words, students expect an effective mediator that can help them to understand and to adapt to the new studying and living environment. Hence, it is important to develop effective media channels that will contribute to integration among international students at HHS by providing recommendations for improvement in media channels and exploring possible solutions to the problem. Project Objective: To develop a communication plan aimed at integrating international students at the Hague University by providing recommendations for improvement of media channels. Advice Question: How to use media channels in order to enhance integration of the international students at The Hague University of Applied Sciences? Research Question: What are the factors that contribute to establishing of an effective media platform in order to improve the integration of international students?
