Ere five years elapse the battle-field Of Gettys burg will present one continuous and unbroken chain of works Of art to per petuate to unborn generations the posi tion of every one of the three hundred and sixty regiments and batteries of the Union army that participated in a battle the most important on which the sun ever shone. Nor will the indications be confined to the Union line.' Visitors flock to the battlefield to witness in person the hallowed ground of the Gettysburg National Military Park, which contains perhaps the largest outdoor collection of stone and bronze sculptures in the world. It is certainly the most memorialized baulefield in the United States. And while they may be drawn by the history of Gettysburg, many are compelled by the monuments, markers, and tablets that dot the landscape. Many of monuments tell stories and provide details of the battle that few have ever read. In some cases, the designs are elaborate. In other cases, they are simple. But in all cases, they serve as permanent memorials to the brave soldiers of the North and South who fought with all of their hearts and souls and died for what they believed. This book opens the door to the monuments of the Gettysburg National Military Park, which for so long have held their silent vigil over the ground that cost so many so much. Their Silent Vigil, Volume One, contains drawings of every regimental monument, clearly displaying every inscription and feature. with painstaking attention to detail, Robert Nixon has created and organized this amazing collection of depictions. Applying his engineering background and creativity, he has fashioned an informative and enduring tribute to the sacrifices made with courage, honor, and loyalty. This provides that tribute in a clear, easy to read format that can be enjoyed in the comfort of your home or while sitting on the boulders of Devil's Den.

The Gettysburg battlefield is a giant outdoor classroom clustered with hundreds of monuments. Their stories set in stone, bronze and iron help visitors explore one of the great turning points in American history. The headquarters monuments provide the background to the story. They were erected just before the battle's 50th anniversary in 1913 to give a visitor the big picture and to put into perspective the monuments to the regiments, batteries and individuals. The book showcases all 110 Union brigade, division, corps and army headquarters monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield, each with a photograph, complete text from the monument, map location and GPS information. Also included is an index of the 223 officers (and one sergeant) named on the monuments and a second index of all subordinate regiments and batteries. Each monument names its unit's commanders and subordinate units, gives a timeline of activities in the battle, and lists casualties. Their wording is in the dispassionate and often awkward voice of an official report, but does not conceal the underlying triumphs and tragedies that together make up the story of this largest and deadliest of all Civil War battles. A companion book on Confederate Headquarters Monuments at Gettysburg is also available.
