Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Nowadays companies all over the world face global competition. Because the bought-in part cost of engineering goods represents a big share of the overall production cost of engineering goods, procurement developed to be a major leverage to save cost in the recent years. As part of it, the supplier management is increasingly considered to be an important business function. Further, the development of supply bases in low-cost-countries (LCC), as China is, over the past years rapidly gained significance, since it is one of the remaining levers to reduce costs. After years of mass production of mostly simple products, today Industrialized-Country (IC) companies from the mechanical engineering industry strive for the sourcing of bought-in parts from Chinese suppliers. The scope of this thesis is to examine the existing methods, especially the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), and other concepts of supplier development and supplier improvement for their application with Chinese suppliers. Based on the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches a new procedure is developed. Therefore the first step is the examination of the supplier development process theoretically and practically. The theoretic view is based on literature research while the source for the examination of the practical problems of German buyers as well as of Chinese suppliers is a questionnaire based interview study among involved companies. Generally occurring threats of the buyer supplier relationship should be analyzed and weighed upon their relevancy especially for the Chinese supply market. Taking these issues into account, the existing procedures for supplier development and improvement are optimized for their application to Chinese companies. Finally the thesis closes with a general risk examination and the development of an applicable FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) based methodology for the assessment of purchasing risk especially in China. IC companies penetrating the Chinese market with the target to source locally have to develop a supply base first. The supplier development identifies the required suppliers, assesses them upon their capabilities and establishes a co-operation. A successful supply needs supplier improvement, since fundamental capabilities are lacking frequently. Further, risks weigh heavier due to the high investments required in advance. Considering mainly small and medium sized enterprises in investment goods industry, the [...]

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 1,0, University Karlsruhe (TH) (Institut für Produktionstechnik - wbk), language: English, abstract: Sourcing relatively simple standardized commodity-like items from Chinese suppliers already poses considerable sourcing challenges. But methodologies and best-practice guidelines exist to identify Chinese suppliers, to develop them, and to establish a global supply chain. However, the case of sourcing unique components from Chinese suppliers is not widely published in the academic literature. Unique components are complex from an engineering point of view, and they are ordered in low volume. Based on a multiple-case study in the electromechanical engineering industry, the result of this thesis is a best-practice guideline for sourcing unique components from Chinese suppliers. The guideline addresses the involvement of different functions including quality assurance with the Chinese supplier, and it shows the different approaches the case companies take for selecting the suppliers. Also, the companies’ production management is addressed. The conclusion is that there are two promising approaches depending on the customer’s re-quirements. One approach is to outsource engineering and manufacturing as far as possible, the other is to engage in a close buyer-supplier-relationship.

It is no longer the case that it’s only society which benefits from CSR actions. A corporation actually helps itself when operating sustainably and does well because of its triple bottom line actions. The editors of People, Planet and Profit believe that whilst Corporate Social Responsibility is by now a familiar concept to academics or practitioners, insufficient attention has been paid to the end product of CSR in practice, which they define in terms of social and economic developmental effect. The contributions in this edited volume explain the developmental aspect of CSR from a conceptual perspective and provide empirical evidence of the impact of CSR delivery on stakeholders in different corners of the World. The emphasis is on what corporations take from and give back to their stakeholders whilst trying to behave in a corporately responsible fashion. Stakeholders, including employees, customers, host communities, governments and NGOs have diverse interests and expectations of CSR. This gives rise to questions about whether the activities corporations support are the ones today’s stakeholders need; whether the CSR programmes being delivered are adequate; and about the relationship between the corporations’ view of what constitutes CSR and that of the supposed beneficiaries. This book offers thoughtful answers to these questions and assesses the outcomes of corporate activities both in developed and developing countries and regions, in terms of economic progress and social and political advancement.

This book seeks to reinvigorate debates on the growing forces influencing China’s social and economic evolution. It draws attention to several neglected areas in the discussion of China’s rapid economic expansion, such as unbalanced growth, mass internal migration, international labour flows, and disparities in access to education, public health, and housing. China’s rapid economic development has attracted the interest of many scholars following its emergence as the world’s second largest economy and stimulated research into the underlying factors that have made this development unique. In advancing research, the chapters included in this edited book help with refining our understanding of the forces that have been driving China’s social- economic, political, institutional and technological developments, addressing the related issues, thus, advancing the social economic literature within the China context. This book serves the interests of scholars who seek to understand more fully the development of China as well as of other emerging economies. One of the chapters in this volume was originally published in the Review of Evolutionary Political Economy. Other chapters were originally published in the Forum for Social Economics.
