The World Health Organization Global Network of National Quality Control Laboratories (WHO-GNP) is an informal network hosted by WHO. Its main mission is strengthening the technical capacity and competence of National Quality Control Laboratories (NQCLs), promoting reliance and information-sharing, facilitating access to state-of-the-art technology and promoting the WHO Prequalification of Pharmaceutical Quality Control Laboratories programme. The Report of the first meeting of WHO-GNP, held on 1 – 3 October 2024, describes the inaugural meeting of the Network. It describes the context of the Network and the advantages in becoming a member, as well as the current and planned activities by WHO Regulation and Safety Unit to strengthen the technical competence of NQCLs. It then summarizes WHO initiatives regarding market surveillance and control and practical experiences from NQCLs combating substandard and falsified medicines. It concludes by summarizing the expectations from the participants of the meeting of the role that this new WHO Network can have in strengthening NQCLs.
