Since publication of the original edition in 1996, this book has established itself as an essential text for occupational therapists. It offers an understanding of the law relating to their practice, but is written to be accessible for those who have no prior legal knowledge. The text provides valuable information for occupational therapists employed in health and social services, as well as the law relevant to private practitioners. The book includes chapters on all the main client groups and presents the relevant specialist law. Students and teachers of occupational therapy will find the chapters on professional registration, education, training and research of particular interest. The third edition has been substantially revised to cover significant changes in legislation since the previous version. There is also a brand new chapter on the subject of death and dying. Legal Aspects of Occupational Therapy remains a key resource for the occupational therapy student, practitioner and service manager.

My aim in writing this book was to provide a guide to management for student occupational therapists and practitioners in the field. It is not intended to provide an answer to every conceivable management situation. The organization and delivery of health and social services is being subjected to relentless scrutiny and change. Hardly has one proposal been implemented before another one is introduced. In view of this, the thrust of this book is to highlight key points to be addressed when looking at the delivery of occupational therapy services. For this reason, the book starts from the viewpoint of one who is in the early stages of an occupational therapy career through to the position of having to manage the staff in an occupational therapy departmentl service. Following this plan, the book has been organized into two parts. Part One covers issues that an occupational therapist has to confront directly in any job situation. In this situation, she will need to know wh at is expected of her. Apart from knowing about the various duties, it is necessary to understand the context in which these duties are to be conducted. Hence, there are chapters that discuss professional responsibilities, self-management, stan dards of practice, and the structure of the two biggest employers of occupational therapists - the NHS and local authority social services departments.

Current experts in the field of school-based occupational therapy discuss best practices and guidelines in consideration of federal and state law. However, private schools do not always operate under this legislation because they do not always receive funding from these sources. The determination and development of internal guidelines for SBOT practice is variable and may or may not consider best or evidence-based practices in a private school setting. The American Occupational Therapy Association states that working in private or independent schools is a developing area of practice for occupational therapists. The lack of guidelines for best practices for occupational therapists in private schools, in conjunction with the increased trend occurring in this practice area, emphasizes and substantiates the importance of developing guidelines for school-based occupational therapy practice in a private school setting. Mission statements guide private school practice and represent the student population that they educate. Focusing the guidelines on the target population of students with learning disabilities in a private elementary school setting aids in specific elements within the program manual.
