Stange and Oyster (religion and women's studies, Skidmore College and psychology, U. of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, respectively) describe their personal relationships to guns, express appreciation for the beauty and skill of shooting, and excoriate the hyperbole on either side of the debate over guns. While asserting the feminist aspects of gun ownership in slightly more nuanced terms than usual, the volume is perhaps too dependent on anecdote to answer the philosophical, psychological, and political questions it engages. The gun-toting woman holds enormous symbolic significance in American culture. For over two centuries, women who pick up guns have disrupted the popular association of guns and masculinity, spurring debates about women's capabilities for violence as well as their capacity for full citizenship. In Her Best Shot, Laura Browder examines the relationship between women and guns and the ways in which the figure of the armed woman has served as a lightning rod for cultural issues. Utilizing autobiographies, advertising, journalism, novels, and political tracts, among other sources, Browder traces appearances of the armed woman across a chronological spectrum from the American Revolution to the present and an ideological spectrum ranging from the Black Panthers to right-wing militias. Among the colorful characters presented here are Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the American Revolution; Pauline Cushman, who posed as a Confederate to spy for Union forces during the Civil War; Wild West sure-shot Annie Oakley; African explorer Osa Johnson; 1930s gangsters Ma Barker and Bonnie Parker; and Patty Hearst, the hostage-turned-revolutionary-turned-victim. With her entertaining and provocative analysis, Browder demonstrates that armed women both challenge and reinforce the easy equation that links guns, manhood, and American identity.

I would say that 99% of women who know how to handle a gun or who are engaged in practical shooting as a sport, were influenced by a male in their lives whether it is the father, husband, brother, boyfriend, uncle or a male friend. Gun ownership, inarguably, is a man’s world. But, it did not say that women cannot dip their fingers to it, if it is necessary, or even if she was just plain interested. In my case, the guilty party was my husband who suavely got my nod, first, for him to own a gun and later on, to join him on his shooting practice, tournaments and gun shows. I have to admit that in the beginning, I would cringe whenever I would see him working on his gun (and later on guns). I always have this thought that it will discharge accidentally and someone could get hurt. At that time, I could not even hold a gun. But then, gradually, I warmed up to it ---- I started holding the gun (no bullets, of course) until later on, my husband would be training me on how to hold it properly, how to get the right stance and eventually how to fire it. Believe it or not, within months, I was going with him on his practice shooting and tournaments. At first, I was the photographer and videographer. Eventually, I would be doing my own practice sessions and would join him on tournaments.

The perfect book for any woman who is interested in purchasing, selecting, and owning a gun, from her first to her five-hundredth firearm. The Handgun Guide for Women gives a public voice to the legions of female gun enthusiasts in the United States. It is a common sense, step-by-step guide to making the decision to purchase a gun, selecting the correct gun, securely keeping a gun in the home, and maintaining the proficiency necessary to be a safe gun owner 100 percent of the time. The book also defies the theory among the popular media that women are, by their maternal nature, anti-gun. Author Tara Dixon Engel, an NRA-certified instructor in handguns, rifles, shotguns, personal defense, and home defense, writes that women should be gun advocates. A firearm is often the one thing that stands between your family and a predator. The Handgun Guide for Women reflects a passionate belief in the Second Amendment. It is a straightforward and meticulously clear representation of the responsibilities involved in gun ownership and is the perfect book for anyone who is considering owning a gun or who has been a proud gun owner for many years.

Private gun ownership for self-defense remains a major personal and public issue in the United States, driven by concerns about crime, vulnerability and a range of ‘ideological’ factors, including race and gender. As media attention centres upon the extent to which women are taking up firearms, with the gun lobby and firearms manufacturers celebrating the ‘new armed woman’, and guns being promoted as ‘Rape Prevention Kits’, this book explores the changing gendered aspects of gun ownership. Can ownership of firearms by women be considered, as some have claimed, the embodiment of what might be termed ‘pioneer feminism’, as women resist male violence in a dangerous world, or are different stories told by the prominence of women in firearms control campaigns, or the fact that women remain frequent victims of male gun ownership? Analysing representations of the ‘armed woman’ in firearm and gun lobby marketing and advertising campaigns, together with television and popular music forms, Gender and Firearms: My Body, My Choice, My Gun examines the directions taken in the public debate on weaponisation in the United States, considering the role of women in the politics of gun safety and gun control. The book draws on statistical evidence in order to shed light on trends in gun ownership, whilst engaging with feminist scholarship on the relationship between gender, violence, risk and vulnerabilities, thus opening up critical new debates surrounding identity, performance, gender and risk in contemporary societies. As such the book will be of likely interest to sociologists and scholars of sociology, criminology, and cultural and media studies with interests in gender, embodiment, risk, crime and violence.

"Men, Women and Guns" is a collection of short stories about World War I, told through the eyes of witnesses but leavened with humor and the author's spots of the ridiculous side of human nature. The book is based on McNeile's experiences with the Royal Engineers Corps. These are the memoirs that describe the experiences that made him who he was and gave him his famous name, "Sapper."
