Almost every anti-colonial struggle in the 20th century was led by an army of guerrillas, and no such struggle has succeeded without cooperation between the guerrillas and the local peasantry. This book examines what such 'cooperation' meant in the context of Zimbabwe's war of independence between 1966 and 1980 when hundreds of thousands of peasants provided the guerrillas with practical help and support. But throughout the country scores of spirit mediums also gave active support to the resistance, and with their help the scale of the war expanded into an astonishing act of collaboration between ancestors and their descendants, the past and the present, the living and the dead.BR> North America: University of California Press

Almost every anti-colonial struggle this century has been led by an army of guerrillas. No such struggle has succeeded without a very high degree of cooperation between guerrillas and the local peasantry. But what does "cooperation" between peasants and guerrillas really consist of? What effect does it have on the way they view the world for which they fight? In the struggle for Zimbabwe (1966-80), hundreds of thousands of peasants provided the guerrillas with practical help and support. But they went a good deal further. Throughout the country scores of spirit mediums, the religious leaders of Shona, gave active support to resistance. With their participation, the scale of the war expanded into an astonishing act of collaboration between ancestors and their descendants, the past and the present, the living and the dead. This book is a detailed study of one key "operational zone" in the Zambezi valley. It shows that to understand the meaning the war and independence have for the people of Zimbabwe themselves, we must take into account not only the nationalist guerrillas and politicians, the bearers of guns, but also the mediums of the spirits of the Shona royal ancestors, the bringers of rain. "The .30 caliber Browning machine gun was adopted by the United States Army in the closing months of World War One. After the war ended there was little interest in development or manufacture of machine guns. In 1939, as the world braced itself for another major war, the Browning machine gun was being placed into mass production in the United States. Over 1,800,000 would be built before the war ended. The venerable Brownings in both .30 and .50 caliber were used by ground forces and were mounted on every vehicle, tank and aircraft the U.S. and her allies sent into the fight. The Brownings served with distinction through World War Two and beyond. This book is about the history, development and use of these famous weapons."--Back cover.

Guns & God: Lines in the Sand is an electrifying adult crime-thriller involving murder, conspiracy, and infidelities that jolt a community as two neighboring families collide over political ideas about gun laws. While one family tries to usher in stricter legislation, the other struggles against it in order to expand its empire of gun sales. However, when patriarch Luke "Fuzzy" Rose learns that a family member will stop at nothing to overtake the family business, all hell breaks loose, sending the family on a manhunt to end the dark plot and exposing its plans for civil war. This novel is set in the heartland of the modern-day gun debate: Arkansas. It is a state where gun ownership and religious institutions represent some of the highest ratios in the country. With strong culturally-embedded ideas of freedom of religion and a die-hard unwavering commitment to the Second Amendment, this drama illustrates the shared fears and concerns of many gun-toting citizens across the U.S. It also illustrates the extent that some will go to in order to preserve and protect their heritage, cultural traditions, and constitutional right to bear arms. It is important to understand this Southern gun culture so that together we may work toward resolve, compromise, and a less gun-violent American society. This story has never been more important than it is today. Rain Story is an Arkansas native. Her experiences of growing up in the South give this story riveting surrealism. While the narrative is not indicative her own beliefs, it is nonetheless written true to form. Rain is an alumna of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Kentucky. She is also a Donaghey Scholar and a fellow of the William G. Cooper, Jr. Honors Program in English.

Now he tells the most dramatic story of all - the titanic battle for Western Europe. D-Day marked the commencement of the European war's final campaign, and Atkinson's riveting account of that bold gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows. The brutal fight in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, the disaster that was Market Garden, the horrific Battle of the Bulge, and finally the thrust to the heart of the Third Reich - all these historic events and more come alive with a wealth of new material and a mesmerizing cast of characters. He has produced the definitive chronicle of the war that unshackled a continent and preserved freedom in the West.
