The influence and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev have swayed the soul of India for centuries. And enriched and ennobled the thoughts and lives of countless generations after him. Born in 1469 at Talwandi he engaged himself in religious devotions, and aspired to produce a religions acceptable to both the Hindus and the Muslims. He traveled with a faithful servant, preaching and composing hymns, through the lenth and breadth of the country and to far away Cylon and Mecca. Those who were motivated and followed him became his Sikhs, a Punjabi word for disciples. The Sikhs of Guru Nanak acquired a separate identity as more joined his movement to purity themselves in thought, word and deed. This biography of the great seer, savant, and social reformer describes his life and his philosophy of life as only a true Sikh like Sardar Sewaram Singh can accomplish. The beautiful work remains unexcelled in its erudition and lyrical beautiful to this day.

Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. First Disciple And Companion. The nws of the Guru's resignation, and of what followed it, spread rapidly and reached Talwandi in no time. Mehta Kalu sent Mardana to Sultanpore to verify the rumour and to induce Nanak, if need be, to abandon his idea of faqiri. Mardana was instructed to strain every nerve to bring Nanak back to his home. He was to be reminded of all his connections. The condition of his wife and children after him was to drawn before his eyes and his heart was to be appealed to, as it was the heart that played the foremost part in him. With this mission Mardana reached Sultanpore, when Guru Nanak had already left the town again and was residing in the jungle. Mardana followed him there and received a cordial welcome, as if Guru Nanak was already waiting for him. Such was the force of Guru Nanak's personality that Mardana could not even open V. Bhai Mardana. 57 his lips to fulfil his mission, and, instead of converting the Guru, for which object he had come, he himself became a convert and disciple. He determined to spend the rest of his life in the Guru's service, notwithstanding the Guru telling him that he would have to suffer hunger and privations, in so doing. Guru Nanak, who was an apostle of the doctrine of brother-hood of man as man, readily conferred on him the title of " Bhai," brother, irrespective of his low origin and caste. It was the inherent virtue and devotion to God, and not the birth, caste, riches, titles, lands, estates, nor worldly offices, which gave superiority to man in the Kingdom of Heaven. Bhakti alone could lead to man's emancipation, and unflinching Faith was the necessary requisite for the attainment of eternal bliss. And Mardana, in whose person the Guru's power was already...

Excerpt from Life and Teachings of Guru Nanak In Gurmuhhi Bhàsha, there exist numerous such books, which treat of Guru Nanak's life and teachings; but in English there are no books of this kind. If there are any; they have been written by those, who had no knowledge of the Gurmukhi literature, which contains all the books, written by Nanak and his successors. Besides, the authors, have endeavoured, in season and out of season, to find faults with the founders of the Khalsa religion and keep the advantages, derived by the people from this true religion, hidden from the readers. On these accounts, such books instead of doing any good, are productive of deplorable effects upon the minds of those, who are desirous of knowing the Khalsa religion in order to embrace it. I went through all the Gurmukhi Janamsakhies of Nanak and noted important facts, which were written in English, so as to meet the required ends. Had those facts been literally translated, the usefulness of this book, which has been written in a foreign tongue, would have been lost. So, I wrote them in such a style and placed them in such an order as to make the book as interesting as possible. If the public will also appreciate this book, my labours will not go in vain. In conclusion, I would gladly receive any suggestions that would tend to make the book more practically useful, from any, who are interested in the cause of the Khalsa religion.
