From the Wolfson History Prize–winning author of The Man on Devil’s Island, the definitive biography of Vivekananda, the Indian monk who shaped the intellectual and spiritual history of both East and West. Few thinkers have had so enduring an impact on both Eastern and Western life as Swami Vivekananda, the Indian monk who inspired the likes of Freud, Gandhi, and Tagore. Blending science, religion, and politics, Vivekananda introduced Westerners to yoga and the universalist school of Hinduism called Vedanta. His teachings fostered a more tolerant form of mainstream spirituality in Europe and North America and forever changed the Western relationship to meditation and spirituality. Guru to the World traces Vivekananda’s transformation from son of a Calcutta-based attorney into saffron-robed ascetic. At the 1893 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, he fascinated audiences with teachings from Hinduism, Western esoteric spirituality, physics, and the sciences of the mind, in the process advocating a more inclusive conception of religion and expounding the evils of colonialism. Vivekananda won many disciples, most prominently the Irish activist Margaret Noble, who disseminated his ideas in the face of much disdain for the wisdom of a “subject race.” At home, he challenged the notion that religion was antithetical to nationalist goals, arguing that Hinduism was intimately connected with Indian identity. Ruth Harris offers an arresting biography, showing how Vivekananda’s thought spawned a global anticolonial movement and became a touchstone of Hindu nationalist politics a century after his death. The iconic monk emerges as a counterargument to Orientalist critiques, which interpret East-West interactions as primarily instances of Western borrowing. As Vivekananda demonstrates, we must not underestimate Eastern agency in the global circulation of ideas.

In The Mind of the Guru, Rajiv Mehrotra presents dialogues with several contemporary sages and masters who have illumined the minds of millions around the world. Ranged here are gurus as diverse as B. K. S. Iyengar, who brought yoga from the world of the esoteric to our living rooms; Swami Ramdev, who has democratized yoga via television; and Mata Amritanandamayi, whose mere presence invokes an overwhelming awareness of love. There is Deepak Chopra discussing a quantum healing of mind and body, Sogyal Rinpoche encouraging us to look at death so that we might live a better life and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar reaffirming each person’s right and access to happiness. And there is the unique and contrary voice of U. G. Krishnamurti telling us that all talk of transformation is poppycock. There are no grand narratives or final solutions, only guides who can show the way to the light within. Here you learn from voices as diverse as that of Thich Nhat Hanh, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Baba Amte and Stanislav Grof. Underlying the dialogues is their wisdom on how we can make ourselves unhappy – and guidance on how we can turn our lives around to achieve happiness.

Millions of people have been deeply affected by the life and teachings of the Guru Narayana, who is the central figure of this book. This is a biography, not only of the Guru Narayana, but of Guruhood itself. Religions and philosophies have their sources in such men, and the aim here is to clarify this fact, without being sentimental or sensational. In doing so, many hitherto baffling enigmas of Indian life are given a rational explanation for the first time. Nataraja Guru, the disciple-successor of the Narayana Guru, uses the contemplative discipline which was characteristic of the Guru Narayana, and brings the Advaita Vedanta method into the forefront of global thought as understood today, introducing a new science of wisdom-dialectics. Nataraja Guru¿s scheme of correlation between science and mysticism amounts to an epochal advance in philosophy. The word of the Guru provides a quantity of original material for study, including fully annotated and carefully translated writings of Guru Narayana. It describes the physical and psychological conditions of South India with great brilliance. The spirituality of India is set forth here in its clearest terms, unambiguous and shorn of all limiting frontiers, suitable for readers in all parts of the world.

Jiddu Krishnamurti was one of the most well-known spiritual teachers of the 20th Century. Though he himself refused to be considered anyone's guru (and he had followers administering his schools and foundations, supporting his material life, reading his books, and attending his talks), he was nonetheless embraced as guru by many. Krishnamurti also denied being Hindu or Indian or a philosopher, but his teachings assumed much of the traditional Indian religious worldview--even as they warned against following one's cultural and psychological conditioning. J. Krishnamurti's life work is still very close to us (he died in 1985), but it is time we began to look critically at this larger-than-life figure. In some ways he is the last of the gurus--for the worldview within which guruhood makes sense is in transition to a new worldview where that side of Indian and New Age spirituality will fade away. And, ironically, Krishnamurti was himself instrumental in the beginning of this worldview transformation. This is the first serious investigation of Krishnamurti's teachings, of his identity, and of his place in the spiritual life of the modern world.

This book explores devotional Hinduism in a modern context of high consumerism and revolutionised communications. It focuses on a fast-growing and high-profile contemporary Hindu guru faith originating in India and attracting a transnational following. The organisation is led by a vastly popular female guru, Mata Amritanandamayi, whom devotees worship as an avatar and a healer of the ills of the contemporary world. By drawing upon multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork among the mata's primarily urban, educated 'middle class' Indian devotees, the author provides crucial insights into new trends in popular Hinduism in a post-colonial and rapidly modernising Indian setting.

Jap Meditation Revealed written by Gurmeet Singh and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-14 with categories.

This book describes revelations about Jap Meditation as explained by Guru Nanak in Japji. Guru Nanak laid foundation of a revolutionary approach to Spirituality some 500 years back. The concepts in Japji elucidate the nature of "true reality" in Creation. The composition itself is a form of steps in the Jap meditation. It is a method that takes us deep within the mindscape where the inner voice of guidance is heard. With it we recognise our origin and the nature of consciousness. Our conscious awareness begins to have new vision. and ability. We can know the Sach, the Truth only when we go within. We can, with this method, reap the benefit of inner world in our worldly life. This is the way to be free of fear and anxiety. This is the method through which we can remove negative thoughts and inclinations from our personality. The move within to the Nirgun point is not only an awakening but an empowerment. At this point, we hear the Celestial Sound vibration of Creation. This shift to this Nirgun point is destined to shift humanity towards a life aligned with the truth of existence. This is an age in the history of mankind that despite the desire about spiritual awakening, there is so much misinformation. Japji tells us that Maya (the deceptive influence) is inbuilt in the world construct. It prevents an easy knowing of truth about the created world. The way out is to be guided by internal guidance. True understanding and guidance come by having an awareness of the Nirgun, the formless world within. Outside in the Physical world this "truth" is not perceptible as there our mind is involved in worldly affairs. We have a self-identity. There is purification and change of attitude. The mind then becomes aware of the presence of Truth. Humanity needs this to get to the next level. In this modern world there is an ongoing talk of consciousness revolution and "Fifth dimensional Living". The concepts for such a life were brought to this world by Guru Nanak with his advent in this world. He travelled more than 28,000 Kms in five major tours of the world during the period from 1500 to 1524 bringing the light of knowledge to the innumerable souls leaving behind his compositions. This book is an English translation of Japji and along with the comments reveals the indicated message. The composition not only reveals the "Truth" but also explains the realisation of it. Gurbani hymns are the words of the inner true Guru. Japji has at its beginning the main light in the form of the Mool Mantar. For awakening to the truth no rites, rituals or pilgrimages are needed. All we need is true guidance. Guru Nanak has brought this method for the humanity. This is the time it is explained with true meanings for humanity's transformation towards an awakened living.

Ma Jaya's memoir leads us through her adventurous childhood in Coney Island, her awakening as a spiritual guru, and her life of fearless love and devotion."With this book, I give you my history, primitive as it is, my history of learning how to live in a world this is filled with so much hate and at the same moment filled with so much beauty and love . I never wanted to teach. I only wanted to share my life. There is a sacred river in India, so brilliant in her love as she continuously flows toward every human being, and everyone that comes toward her is blessed and purified. My wish was that I could always be like that river. Now when there is so much pain in the world, the whole river is in my heart, and the river has overflowed her banks."
