“I moved to USA from Poland. I was 22 years old then. I thought it will be so amazing, just like I always thought my life would be. My dream of going to the incredible paradise that USA stands for many, was coming true. So happy, so excited, so fearless. Soon, my "color glasses" felt off and the real, very brutal life has started. Life to survive! My life went from wealthy to poor; from having lots of friends to feeling alone and forgotten; from not worried about food to that excruciating pain in my stomach caused by hunger. Never thought I will have to worry about being homeless but my destiny had different plans for me. I went from being loved, cared to that pain of being abused physically, broken down mentally. I learned the definition of true, deep, incredible love filled with passion, butterflies, happiness. I had the privilege to experience the pain of a broken heart; where my soul had been ripped out of me without any warnings. I went from somebody to nobody, from being smart collage girl to confused, lost little child. Luck of English knowledge, total culture shock and pure fear have welcomed me at the airport, where emotional roller coaster has become my every day companion. My road of life has been very hard, filled with rocks but I am still heading forward, dragging my luggage behind. Luggage filled with my life, life of a Polish immigrant." www.facebook.com/taneyalyn

150 traditional favorites from Chicago’s famed Berghoff Restaurant alongside contemporary culinary creations, plus a guide to entertaining at home. With The Berghoff Family Cookbook, fans of the beloved restaurant can now make Berghoff classics at home, including the famous Berghoff Creamed Spinach, German Potato Salad, Wiener Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, Apple Strudel, Black Forest Cake, and many more treasured and—until now—secret recipes from the Berghoff’s celebrated kitchens. More than a collection of wonderful recipes, The Berghoff Family Cookbook is a piece of Chicago history and an essential guide for cooking and party planning. What started as a small saloon in 1898 quickly became a Chicago dining institution when Prohibition prompted founder Herman Joseph Berghoff to start serving meals to stay in business. When Prohibtion ended in 1933, the Berghoff Restaurant was the first Chicago establishment to receive a liquor license, and it soon became famous for both its traditional German food and its Dortmunder beer. The Berghoff Family Cookbook offers a rare and personal glimpse into the history of a Chicago landmark, complete with full-color photographs of Berghoff’s no-nonsense waitstaff and legendary chefs, its iconic stained-glass windows and murals, the famous mahogany bar, and the chandeliers, as well as old menus and historical items never before seen by the public. Jan and Carlyn Berghoff not only provide treasured memories about the restaurant, but they also offer their wealth of knowledge and experience on beer and food pairings, how to host a bourbon tasting, party planning, and tips for memorable and hassle-free gatherings. In addition, Carlyn Berghoff shares many of her favorite recipes from her successful catering company, including Shrimp Martinis, Pesto Cheesecake, Grilled Vegetable Wraps, Pan-Seared Tilapia with Tabasco Broth, and Almond-Pear Tartlets. The Berghoff Family Cookbook helps cooks everywhere create delicious food, special celebrations, and lasting traditions.

Ever since I left the land that was my home, wherever I have traveled and lived, I have been asked the same question: How could a Hitler happen, in the land of poets and scientists and thinkers, the land of music and arts, the land of plenty, the land of orderliness and efficiency, of cleanliness and dependability, the very land of humaneness? Born in Hannover in 1905 as a German Jew, Fred Harry Meyer (1905–1969) and his new Christian bride fled to the USA in the nick of time in 1937. His autobiography provides a vivid and detailed yet flowing picture of the life left behind in Germany up till 1932 and the events that led to Nazi Germany, World War II, and the Holocaust.

This captivating book is a story of the friendship between a genius physicist Wolfgang Pauli and Charlotte Houtermans whose career in physics was not as glamorous. They met in the late 1920s in Germany, at the very onset of the quantum era and personally knew all the major players in the emergent quantum world that was very much part of central Europe: Germany, Austria, Hungary, Denmark and Switzerland. And Charlotte was a student at Göttingen that was right at the heart. Caught between two evils — Soviet Communism and German National Socialism — she would have probably perished if it were not for the brotherhood of physicists: Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli, Albert Einstein, James Franck, Max Born, Robert Oppenheimer and many other noted scientists who tried to save friends and colleagues (either leftist sympathizers or Jews) who were in mortal danger of being entrapped in a simmering pre-WWII Europe. Using newly discovered documents from the Houtermans family archive: twenty three Pauli's letters to Charlotte Houtermans, her correspondence with other great physicists, Charlotte's diaries, interviews with her children, almost all documents presented in this book are published for the first time.
