We both went through separate immigration lines, she as a Hong Kong Resident, me as an alien, just like the first time stepping through the border check-point from Hong Kong to China. Then I was lost for an hour. Alone in China. No English signs, as in Hong Kong, no English speaking. Just helpless. It wouldn't be so bad if I'd worked harder at my Cantonese language skills. Wouldn't be so bad if I'd bothered to learn some basic reading skills so I could understand simple signs with directions, like "up" or "down," "left" or "right." What made it worse is that this wasn't the first time. Exactly the same thing happened in 2012, the first time I'd made this border crossing. What made it infuriating was that it had happened again despite having discussed a plan, and a very specific contingency plan, but look though I may, high and low, I was completely alone. I walked up and down for a while. I stayed in the same spot for a while. I walked around in circles for a while, dragging my suitcase. No sign of her anywhere. There were people teeming everywhere and most of them looked like her. And of course, I shouldn't be too hard to find. A Gweilo cork in a sea of Chinese...

Do you love travel stories? Gweilo in the Diaolou takes you to regional China on the road less traveled. Gweilo is a Cantonese slang term meaning "ghost man" or white man. Diaolou are defensive watch towers only found in the villages and towns of Kaiping county in the province of Guangdong, China. In a classic fish out of water story Australian Rob Harvey travels to rural China and gets himself tangled up with the language, the culture, the cuisine and the history.Despite the language barrier, he forms close and connecting bonds with friends and family with a combination of humor, respect and compassion. This very personal adventure will have you laughing from one side of China to the other through dumplings, dragons and diaolous. "As I walked through the door, every single pair of eyes in the restaurant locked onto me, locked onto the Gweilo. It was very intimidating. We were ushered upstairs away from the crowd, as each pair of eyeballs followed my every step. I counted them. 200 eyeballs were staring, fixated on the freak that just walked into the restaurant and up the stairs." If you love a good travel adventure laced with humor, then you will love Rob Harvey's Gweilo in the Diaolou.

“A wonderful read—with all of a fairy tale’s leaps and turns and queer, vivid images” by the author of the international bestseller Raise the Red Lantern (The Observer). In Peach village, crying was forbidden. But as a child, Binu never learned to hide her tears. Shunned by the villagers, she faced a bleak future until she met Qiliang, an orphan who offered her his hand in marriage. Then, one day, Qiliang disappears. Binu learns that he has been transported hundreds of miles and forced to labor on a project of terrifying ambition and scale—the building of the Great Wall of China. Unwilling to live a life without him, Binu courageously decides to find and save her husband. Inspired by her love, she sets out on an extraordinary journey toward Great Swallow Mountain with only a blind frog for company. What follows is an adventure unlike any she could have ever imagined, in this “gripping, insightful . . . tragic tale of female strength and ultimately, love” (Time Out).

From being Champion of Champions to one of the world's top cricket commentators to Team India's head coach, Ravi Shastri has an incomparable perspective when it comes to the game of cricket. In Stargazing: The Players in My Life, the legendary all-rounder looks back at the extraordinary talent he has encountered over the years. Who is the former Indian captain who didn't do full justice to his talent? Or that bruising bowler who went on to become a best friend? What was the most important lesson the legendary Clive Llyod taught him? How does Shastri set aside his personal bond with Virat Kohli in his role as coach? Full of never-before-revealed anecdotes, Stargazing, co-written with Ayaz Memon and featuring illustrations by Shiva Rao, offers a glimpse into how champions from across the globe have inspired one of the world's greatest ODI players and Team India's most successful Test cricket coach.
