The Romany people are descendants of the ancient warrior classes of Northern India who trekked westwards around AD1000. They were, and still are, often referred to as 'gypsies', but their correct and preferred name is Roma. Their migration took them through Persia and Armenia into Europe and later America. Recipes survived through the centuries, frequently undergoing intervention and interpretation to meet the tastes of a particular time. Very few recipes were ever written down most were handed down verbally through generations. Today, as modern life encroaches on the traditional Romany ways, the old traditions are disappearing rapidly. Convenience foods, modern cooking tools, and appliances have ousted the old cooking methods and traditional recipes, although some are still made for special occasions. This book evokes a memorable picture of the old ways, recipes, feast days, marriage customs, and funeral feasts as well as a unique way of life that has almost disappeared forever.

Through the centuries, Gypsies all over the world have been misunderstood, maligned, rejected. Outcasts of the countries in which they live, they have wandered for centuries over the face of the earth. They have no homeland, no political unity, no recognition among nations. They have been alone, sundered, shunned, persecuted and banished. Until about a century ago, their original home had been a matter of dispute. Their language had been a source of puzzlement. Yet their conduct and their traditions, their feeling for music, dance and song, have all been acclaimed. Still they were not accepted and were forced to remain apart from conventional society. Here is their epic history, with its folktales and beliefs, its rites and customs. Here is the vast treasury of the Gypsies.

Phil Masters is the builder of a small exclusive community in the foothills just outside of Denver. An unusually fierce winter blizzard blocks the only road out and brings in a caravan of itinerant Gypsies seeking shelter. Shortly afterwards, a pack of hungry wolves descends on the town and carry off a baby. The citizens are sure that the Gypsies have attracted the wolves from the scent of their cooking outdoors and demand that Masters gets rid of them. It turns out Phil's girlfriend is a Gypsy herself and she warns Phil that it is something else that's bringing in the wolves. It becomes apparent she is right as several of the citizens suddenly reveal themselves as the Torii – ancient monsters who control the wolves and are intent on killing all the townspeople in an effort to gain immortality for themselves. Phil manages to band together a few of the townspeople to fight them but with the wolves helping there's no way they can defeat them. The Gypsies alone have the weapon to defeat them but they have no intention of helping. As the townspeople are slaughtered one by one Phil's girlfriend pleads with the Gypsies to give her the weapon, but the Torii and their wolves have no intention of letting that happen.

Music City And The Roma Under Communism written by Anna G. Piotrowska and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-10 with Music categories.

This book highlights the role of Romani musical presence in Central and Eastern Europe, especially from Krakow in the Communist period, and argues that music can and should be treated as one of the main points of relation between Roma and non-Roma. It discusses Romani performers and the complexity of their situation as conditioned by the political situations starkly affected by the Communist regime, and then by its fall. Against this backdrop, the book engages with musician Stefan Dymiter (known as Corroro) as the leader of his own street band: unwelcome in the public space by the authorities, merely tolerated by others, but admired by many passers-by and respected by his peer Romain musicians and international music stars. It emphasizes the role of Romani musicians in Krakow in shaping the soundscape of the city while also demonstrating their collective and individual strategies to adapt to the new circumstances in terms of the preferred performative techniques, repertoire, and overall lifestyle.
