Few people realize that being Gypsy in 1943 Poland was as dangerous and frightening as being a Jew. It is guessed that between five hundred thousand to one million Gypsies perished during the Holocaust, the Porraimos (the devouring) as the Gypsies called it. Gypsy Spirit is the story of fifteen year-old Zilka Sucuri, a Gypsy girl who is thrust into the horrors of the Holocaust. Her life of traveling from town to town, singing and dancing the Gypsy way comes to an unconscionable stop when a SS death squad shoot every man, woman, and child in her kumpania. If she had not literally been up a tree, she would have been among those lying dead in a mass grave. Her lungo drom (the long road) takes her across Poland, Austria, and Germany in a driving struggle to help an American pilot return safely to his unit so he can return to bomb the many concentration, work, and death camps all across Poland and Germany. Her efforts reveal the truths of Belzec, the challenges of the partisans, and the burning desire to survive to be a living witness of what truly happened to the non-Aryans of Hitler’s Germany. Gypsy Spirit is a story of the driving spirit of a Gypsy girl, who took it upon herself to document the truth. Her strength and determination brings to light a story of magnanimity and the fears and atrocities such a Gypsy girl might have lived through.

Gypsy Spirit charts an inspiring two-year voyage set amidst the tumultuous world of singlehanded sailing. This captivating memoir recounts the true life adventures and harrowing encounters of author Christine Bukruian's initiation into the culture of boats, sailors, and the open sea.Motivated by her mother's passing, Christine purchases a used 36-foot sloop, renames it Gypsy Spirit and is soon “living the dream,” along with Kia, her 50-pound lab/golden mix. Through trial and misadventure, Gypsy Spirit and her crew are made seaworthy with the assistance of Ed, a seasoned South African sailor on his way to the Bahamas. Ed invites Gypsy Spirit to sail in tandem with his boat, Nini, and his trial-by-fire sailing lesson propels their relationship and Christine's appreciation of life at sea. Christine becomes a competent, self-reliant sailor, which proves fortunate as Gypsy Spirit and her crew find themselves alone on a horrific, storm-swept night marked by a devastating collision with a 264-foot container ship. Tropical settings – from picture perfect islands with postcard images of sun, sea, and swaying palms, to pelicans flying overhead and dolphins trailing in the boat's wake– afford a vicarious journey for all to enjoy. But Gypsy Spirit's true reward is as a personal testament to overcoming fears, embracing new passions, and fulfilling improbable dreams.

Since she had been a young girl, Mary had danced to the beat of a different drummer. Free of her domineering husband, she began to hear that beat again. Mary hit the rowdy road to find a new life and explore her inner abilities. She needed to know who she was in her own right. Most important to her was keeping her integrity. Many things were taken from her on this journey; the best of them was her innocence. She faced death and physically fought for her preservation and life. Becoming destitute at one point, she challenged God to either let her die or to care for her needs of food, shelter and clothing. While she was testing God, He was allowing her integrity to be tested. This story must be read to appreciate all Mary did to survive and her thoughts during these events.
