Haarlem wordt vaak neergezet als een wat ingeslapen, kleinburgerlijk stadje in de schaduw van het dynamische Amsterdam. In feite werd Haarlem door zijn hele geschiedenis gekenmerkt door industrie en een daarbij horende arbeidersbevolking. Al in de 17de eeuw was Haarlem met zijn linnennijverheid een belangrijk industrieel centrum en in de 19de en vroege 20ste eeuw, wel gezien als de Tweede Gouden Eeuw, groeide het zelfs sneller dan de hoofdstad. Er ontstonden grote volkswijken en volkspartijen als de SDAP/PvdA gingen de gemeenteraad beheersen. Haarlem wordt voor het eerst vermeld in een tussen 885 en 948 opgesteld document van de Utrechtse St.-Maartenskerk. De Utrechtse bisschop claimde daarin drie boerderijen terug die in de Vikingentijd verloren waren gegaan. Op de plek van die boerderijen vestigden de Hollandse graven een hof, die zich ontwikkelde tot een militair centrum. Uit die militaire nederzetting kon een stad groeien doordat in de 13de eeuw het Spaarne een schakel werd in de route tussen de Hanzesteden aan de Oostzee en rijke Vlaamse steden als Ieper, Brugge en Gent. Aan een stad van handelaren, ambachtslieden en steeds meer arbeiders werden politiek, economisch, religieus en cultureel andere eisen gesteld dan aan een legerplaats. Het bestuur en de rechtspraak kwamen bij belangrijke burgers te liggen. Ook het sociale, religieuze en culturele leven paste zich toen en telkens opnieuw aan als de stad een nieuwe fase van ontwikkeling doormaakte. Soms gebeurde dat geleidelijk, soms met geweld. In dit boek is geprobeerd het economische, sociale, politieke en culturele leven in Haarlem en van de plaats van die stad in haar omgeving vanaf de eerste oorsprong tot de huidige tijd in zijn samenhang te beschrijven.

This collection of critical essays is designed to lay the foundations for a new theory of the European avant-garde. It starts from the assumption that not one all-embracing intention of all avant-garde movements - i.e. the intention of "reintegrating art into the practice of life" (Peter Bürger) - but the challenge of new cultural technologies, in particular photography and cinema, constitutes the main driving force of the formation and further development of the avant-garde. This approach permits to establish a theoretical framework that takes into account the diversity of artistic aims and directions of the various art movements and encourages a wide and open exploration of the multifaceted and often contradictory nature of the great variety of avant-gardist innovations. Following the theoretical foundation of the new approach, individual contributions concentrate on a diverse range of avant-gardist concepts, trends and manifestations from cubist painting and the literary work of Apollinaire and Gertrude Stein to the screeching voices of futurism, dadaist photomontage and film, surrealist photographs and sculptures and neo-avant-gardist theories as developed by the French group OuLiPo. The volume closes with new insights gained from placing the avant-garde in the contexts of literary institutions and psychoanalytical and sociological concepts. The main body of the volume is based on presentations and discussions of a three-day research seminar held at Yale University, New Haven, in February 2000. The research group formed on this occasion will continue with its efforts to elaborate a new theory of the avant-garde in the coming years.

Aan de Nederlandse revolutietijd (1780-1813) schrijven historici grote impact toe. Maar wat merkten de burgers van Haarlem en Groningen eigenlijk van alle veranderen? Betrokken burgers vormden de ruggengraat van de Republiek. Het dagelijks leven draaide voor een groot deel op buurtorganisaties, gilden en schutterijen - en dat waren juist de stedelijke instituties waar zij deel van uitmaakten. In 1796 kondigden de Bataafse revolutionairen het einde van sommige van deze instellingen af en introduceerden zij het staatsburgerschap. Maar was daarmee de rol van de stedelijke burger ook uitgespeeld? Dat komen we te weten als we luisteren naar de stadsbewoners zelf. Aan de hand van de levens van Haarlemmers en Groningers tussen 1747 en 1848 illustreert dit boek het voortbestaan van lokaal burgerschap. Zij komen aan het woord via verzoekschriften, kronieken, gelegenheidsgedichten, vergadernotulen en mondelinge klachten op de burgemeesterskamer. Hoe zag de ideale stedelijke gemeenschap er volgens hen uit? Welke rechten en plichten had een burger in hun ogen? En wat waren de dure plichten van een stadsbestuurder? Voor dit burgerschap putten stadsbewoners met souplesse uit traditionele én revolutionaire idealen en praktijken. Carolien Boender (1989) is historicus. Zij promoveerde aan de Universiteit Leiden. Haar expertise ligt bij stadsgeschiedenis en de politieke en culturele geschiedenis van Nederland in de achttiende en negentiende eeuw.
