A volte, però, anche l'improbabile trova la via per realizzarsi: questo libro dimostra che non è impossibile che addirittura un papa e un ateo arrivino a confrontarsi, e che lo facciano scambiandosi non salamelecchi formali, ma argomenti sostanziali.» Nell'aprile 2011 Piergiorgio Odifreddi scrive a Benedetto XVI una lettera aperta in cui sollecita una discussione sul rapporto tra fede e ragione, religione e scienza, prendendo spunto da passi salienti di alcuni dei testi più noti di Ratzinger, da Introduzione al Cristianesimo a Gesù di Nazaret. Due anni più tardi, dopo essersi dimesso, Benedetto XVI legge Caro Papa, ti scrivo e decide di rispondere, punto per punto, capitolo per capitolo, agli argomenti del matematico a favore dell'ateismo e contro la religione in generale, e il cattolicesimo in particolare: dalla provocazione della teologia come fantascienza, al comportamento peccaminoso dei sacerdoti come prova della presenza del male all'interno della Chiesa stessa, al dubbio radicale sulla veridicità storica della figura e delle parole di Gesù. Il risultato di questo scambio, come sottolinea Odifreddi nella Prefazione, «costituisce un unicum nella storia della Chiesa: un dialogo fra un papa teologo e un matematico ateo. Divisi in quasi tutto, ma accomunati almeno da un obiettivo: la ricerca della Verità, con la maiuscola. È questa Verità che i critici del papa, e più modestamente anche i miei, bollano come "fondamentalismo": teologico in un caso, scientista nell'altro. È questa Verità che entrambi pensiamo non solo di poter trovare, ma di aver già trovato: l'uno nella religione e nel cristianesimo, l'altro nella matematica e nella scienza. Uno di noi sbaglia, ciascuno di noi crede che a sbagliare sia l'altro, e in questo libro cerchiamo entrambi di spiegare perché.»

With Western cultures becoming more pluralistic, the question of "truth" in politics has become a game of interpretations. Today, we face the demise of the very idea of truth as an objective description of facts, though many have yet to acknowledge that this is changing. Gianni Vattimo explicitly engages with the important consequences for democracy of our changing conception of politics and truth, such as a growing reluctance to ground politics in science, economics, and technology. Yet in Vattimo's conception, a farewell to truth can benefit democracy, exposing the unspoken issues that underlie all objective claims. The end of absolute truth challenges the legitimacy of policies based on perceived objective necessities protecting the free market, for example, even if it devastates certain groups or classes. Vattimo calls for a truth that is constructed with consensus and a respect for the liberty of all. By taking into account the cultural paradigms of others, a more "truthful" society freer and more democratic becomes possible. In this book, Vattimo continues his reinterpretation of Christianity as a religion of charity and hope, freeing society from authoritarian, metaphysical dogmatism. He also extends Nietzsche's "death of God" to the death of an authoritarian God, ushering in a new, postreligious Christianity. He connects the thought of Martin Heidegger, Karl Marx, and Karl Popper with surprising results and accommodates modern science more than in his previous work, reconciling its validity with an insistence that knowledge is interpretive. Vattimo's philosophy justifies Western nihilism in its capacity to dispense with absolute truths.
