Ifølge Cappelen er dette på alle måter en stor roman, litterært, innholdsmessig og i antall sider. Den spenner over fire generasjoner, og kronologisk åpner den fredsdagen 1945, da hovedpersonens mor, Vera, 19 år gammel, blir voldtatt på et tørkeloft i Kirkeveien. Resultatet av voldtekten er Fred, halvbroren. Den yngre broren heter Barnum, og er bokens hovedperson. Forholdet mellom disse brødrene er romanens kjerne. Storebroren er kompromissløs, hatefull, taus, med en gjennomgangsreplikk "Skal jeg drepe faren din for deg, Barnum". Barnum er liten av vekst, sky, engstelig, en kunstner. Store deler av romanen omhandler hans oppvekst. Geografisk spenner romanen fra Berlin til Nord-Norge, men sentrum ligger hele tiden i og rundt Kirkeveien i Oslo. I leiligheten her bor tre generasjoner kvinner; oldemor " en dansk skuespillerinne, mormor " som stadig har utflukter til restaurant Nordpolen og mor Vera, som gifter seg med Arnold Nilsen fra Røst, en eventyrer og slabbedask som skaffer familien mange gleder og sorger.
