Excerpt from Hand-Book Mineral Resources of Georgia The latter variety is extensively mined in Habersham and White counties, near Nacoochee, this State. The White County mines here referred to have been the chief producers of asbestos in this country for several years. The finer varieties of asbestos are spun and woven into fireproof cloth. It is a non-conductor of heat and electricity, and therefore is used for electrical insulation, steam pipe, boiler coverings, etc. It is also used in the manufacture of fire-proof paint, various building materials, such as lumber, shingles and plaster. Barytes This mineral, often called heavy spar, from its high specific gravity, is a common gangue mineral of lead, zinc, copper, etc. It likewise occurs as distinct veins and as irregular ore bodies in limestones, sandstones, and in residual clays. The Georgia barytes deposits, which have so far been worked in a commercial way, are located near Emerson, Bartow County, and at Eton. Murray County. The mineral is largely used as a substitute for white lead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Preliminary Report on the Mineral Resources of Georgia, 1910 For some years there has been an ever increasing demand on the State Geological Survey for general information on the State's mineral resources not heretofore supplied in any one of the various publications Of the department. To meet this demand this volume has been issued with the hope that it will not only meet the Object for which it was published, but also, at the same time, stimulate activity in the develop ment Of our mineral resources. It must be borne in mind that this report is by no means intended to be a comprehensive report on the mineral resources Of the State, but only a pre liminary report covering, in a general way, only the principal economic minerals. To those who wish to pursue the differ ent subjects further than here discussed they will find a num ber Of references after each subject, which will be of especial value. Excerpt from Mineral Resources of Georgia and Caucasia: Manganese Industry of Georgia The Georgians are an ancient civilized race with three thousand years of existence, but in spite of that very little known, as Georgia since 1801 ceased to be an independent kingdom, was forcibly annexed by the Russian Empire in violation of the Treaty of 1783, and was never allowed to make herself known to the outside world. Geography. Georgia is situated in Transcaucasia, between the Black and the Caspian Seas(40-49 northern latitude, and 39-47 east of Greenwich). She is separated from the North Caucasus by the celebrated Caucasian mountain chain, which stretches for a distance of a thousand miles from the Black Sea to the Caspian, and has an average height of 10,000 feet and in some places, as in the peaks of the Elbruz and the Kasbek, even 18,000 feet. Georgia comprises the following provinces and districts: Tiflis, Zakathal, Kutais, Sukhum, the northern part of the Black Sea Province towards Tuapse, Ardahan and Olti districts, provinces of Batum and Lazistan up to Trebizond. The total area of this territory is 43,000 square miles. The frontiers of Georgia are: in the north, the Caucasian mountain chain; in the east, Aderbeijan; in the south, Armenia; and in the south-west, Turkey. Among the rivers the most prominent are: Kura, 310 miles long; Ingur, 95 miles;Rion, 140 miles; Chorokb, 160 miles;Terek, 210 miles. The climate of Georgia is very similar to that of Italy and Spain. Under the protection of the Caucasian mountains and with plenty of moisture, there is a rich vegetation, and at a height of 4,000 feet there grow vast forests of oak, beech, chestnut, pines boxwood, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
