Excerpt from A d104-Book of Free-Hand Lettering The changes in this edition of Free-hand Lettering are so numerous and radical that the result is a new book, rather than a revision of the old one. The text has been entirely rewritten, and new plates and figures have been drawn. The proportions of letters have been greatly improved, and a distinctly higher standard has been set for the student. At the same time, he is given careful directions to enable him to approach the standard. These directions have been made as explicit and clear as possible, for the author is well aware that the time which can be given to this work in the technical schools is very limited. Throughout the book there is a constant attempt to present principles which will appeal to the student's reason, rather than to give rules which will only tax his memory; that is, an efiort is made to show that the details, which at first sight may seem numberless and involved, have a logical basis. When this basis is once understood, no effort of memory is necessary for the proper handling of details. On the other hand, teachers should remember, especially in the first stages of the work, that it is not sufficient for students to understand reasons. In order that they may attain the object of their work in this subject, they must acquire skill in execution; wherefore the definite directions for performing exercises. There is repeated insistence in the text that lettering belongs in the realm of design. If the work is approached with this idea, it will be done with pleasure, and with a sense that it is a means of expressing individuality. Excerpt from Lettering for Draftsmen, Engineers and Students: A Practical System of Freehand Lettering for Working Drawings IN looking over the books on lettering, which have come under the writer's notice, he has found, that while doing full justice to the principle of ornamentation and the theories governing the shaping of each letter, no author has as yet attempted to treat lettering from a purely practical point of view. The need of a practical work on lettering, however, has been and is daily experienced by many draftsmen, and in the following pages the writer has endeavored to set forth the proper methods of forming purely free-hand lettering in a simple, easily acquired way, giving, at the same time, the proper safeguards against the errors most commonly committed. The letters exhibited are actual free-hand work and can readily be copied. In this respect the writer has made a radical departure from works of a similar charac ter which generally give ornate, carefully engraved alphabets, being of little more use to the average draftsman than ordinary printed type, i. Excerpt from Notes on Technical Sketching and Free Hand Lettering for Engineering Students The modern engineer must know how to make drawings in order to know how to read them. However, very little of his time is spent at the drafting board. His drawings consist mainly of sketches showing his ideas in more or less detail and which are turned over to subordinates to be worked out and put in the conventional form. In the solution of his construction problems, he is obliged to keep in mind all three dimensions of materials and a preliminary sketch stands in the place of a model which he can work over and examine in order to clarify and fix his ideas. Such sketches must often be made in great profusion and dexterity with the pencil is fre quently an inspiration to the brain. One of the primary functions of a course in drawing is to cultivate and extend the faculty of thinking in space. In acquiring this faculty, the draftsman must be able to express his ideas quickly and accurately through the medium of drawings. He must also learn to read correctly the ideas of other engineers as expressed in drawings. The actual construction of an object from the drawing representing it is a crucial test of ability to read that drawing. There are many disadvantages of such a test applied for that purpose alone and it is believed that the translation from a projection drawing of the object to an axometric or isometric representation meets all the requirements of the case with far less expenditure of time. The reverse process also gives a most valuable training and the author believes, after long experience in this work, that the methods herein presented secure the best results with the least effort. Though devoted primarily to the teaching of drawing, the illustrations and problems have been selected so as to give the student familiarity with a wide, range of mo manufacturing and engineering practice. A considerable amount 'of material has been added for this sec edition and the author wishes to thank the many friends who have provided material or given suggestions.
