This handbook has been prepared for the training workshop on innovative methods of amelioration and use of salt-affected soils, which takes place in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in September 2017. This workshop is conducted within the framework of the Implementation Plan of the Eurasian Soil Partnership, which is a sub-regional affiliation of the Global Soil Partnership. The main goals of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and Regional Soil Partnerships (RSPs) include the development of global and regional plans of action for the sustainable management and monitoring of limited soil resources as a key element, as well as the maintenance of food security and ecological services of soils. The RSPs rely on the existing regional networks that connect the national and local networks, partners, projects and measures to ensure that the interests of all member countries of the partnership are taken into account. A RSP should give directives for the development of regional targets, priorities and ìrequred mechanisms of implementation and also undertake regular assessments of progress in reaching goals and accomplishing the tasks. The Eurasian Region covers Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Caucasus and includes the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The Eurasian Region is diverse in terms of climatic conditions, soils, flora and fauna, land use and human activities. Soil degradation is a serious problem within this region, with its most destructive consequences including salinization, erosion, loss of soil organic matter, nutrients and biodiversity as well as soil compaction. Soil salinization presents a serious challenge that requires co-ordination between countries that share common water and land resources. International co-operation is also needed to attract and manage investment into water and land resources. It should be emphasized that salinization is both the cause and the result of other agricultural problems. Combating salinization should, together with other measures for achieving the sustainable intensification of agriculture, be considered as a basis for food security..

The book has been logically divided into 8 chapters, successively dealing with the technological components in each chapter. Most of the issues that have been discussed for waterlogged inland saline soils have been briefly discussed in the last 8th Chapter, for the coastal regions. Finally the socio-economic aspects which are important to decide the economic viability of rehabilitation projects have been included in the last chapter. Computer programmes have been included, which is the modern approach in dealing with issues of design and development.

Agroecological Approaches for Sustainable Soil Management Enables readers to strengthen existing agricultural strategies to sustainably solve contemporary problems like food supply chain gaps and food scarcity Agroecological Approaches for Sustainable Soil Management explains strategies to check the deterioration of soil quality, irrigation water quality, reuse of wastewaters in agriculture after treatment, organic fertigation, and corporate fertigation, to transform current agriculture into sustainable agriculture, and demonstrates cost effective technologies for sustainable development of site-specific ecosystems. Techniques to eradicate malnutrition, such as enhanced biofortification, are also covered. Sample topics covered in Agroecological Approaches for Sustainable Soil Management include: Foremost developments in the restoration and utilization of degraded lands through organic farming, precision agriculture, climate-resilient fodder/forage cultivation, and livestock management Promotion of agro-forestry-based apiculture, silviculture, and sericulture, and corporate fertigation, and reclaiming urban brownfields and industrial areas Development of diverse products, including biofuel, fiber, fodder, timber, and herbal products leading to the generation of social capitals Ecology of intercropping systems, tree-cover dynamics of grazing lands, and cover crops for soil management Agroecological Approaches for Sustainable Soil Management is a comprehensive and authoritative resource on the subject, making it a must-have resource for scientists working in agrobiodiversity, agroecology, bioscience, restoration ecology, soil science, and sustainable science, along with postgraduate students in ecology, environmental sciences, and environmental economics.

This book gathers the latest findings on the microbial ecology of saline habitats, plant-microbe interactions under saline conditions, and saline soil reclamation for agricultural use. The content is divided into four main parts: Part I outlines the definition of salinity, its genesis and impacts, and microbial diversity in saline habitats. Part II deals with impact of salinity on microbial and plant life/health. Part III highlights plant – microbe interactions in saline environments, and Part IV describes strategies for mitigation and reclamation of saline soils. The salinization of arable land is steadily increasing in many parts of the world. An excessive concentration of soluble salts (salinity) in soils or irrigation water adversely affects plant growth and survival. This problem is exacerbated in arid and semiarid areas due to their low precipitation and high evaporation rates. In turn, poor management practices and policies for using river water forthe irrigation of agriculture crops often lead to the secondary salinization of soils. Considering the growing demands of a constantly expanding population, understanding the microbial ecology and interactions under saline conditions and their implications for sustainable agriculture is of utmost importance. Providing both an essential review of the status quo and a future outlook, this book represents a valuable asset for researchers, environmentalists and students working in microbiology and agriculture. .
