The Handbook of Biomedical Nonlinear Optical Microscopy provides comprehensive treatment of the theories, techniques, and biomedical applications of nonlinear optics and microscopy for cell biologists, life scientists, biomedical engineers, and clinicians. The chapters are separated into basic and advanced sections, and provide both textual and graphical illustrations of all key concepts. The more basic sections are aimed at life scientists without advanced training in physics and mathematics, and tutorials are provided for the more challenging sections. The first part of the Handbook introduces the historical context of nonlinear microscopy. The second part presents the nonlinear optical theory of two- and multiphoton excited fluorescence (TPE, MPE) spectroscopy, second and third harmonic generation (SHG, THG) spectroscopy, and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). The third part introduces modern microscopic and spectroscopic instrumentation and techniques that are based on nonlinear optics. The fourth part provides key applications of nonlinear microscopy to the biomedical area: neurobiology, immunology, tumor biology, developmental biology, dermatology, and cellular metabolism. There are also chapters on nonlinear molecular probes, cellular damage, and nanoprocessing.

Biomedical optical imaging is a rapidly emerging research area with widespread fundamental research and clinical applications. This book gives an overview of biomedical optical imaging with contributions from leading international research groups who have pioneered many of these techniques and applications. A unique research field spanning the microscopic to the macroscopic, biomedical optical imaging allows both structural and functional imaging. Techniques such as confocal and multiphoton microscopy provide cellular level resolution imaging in biological systems. The integration of this technology with exogenous chromophores can selectively enhance contrast for molecular targets as well as supply functional information on processes such as nerve transduction. Novel techniques integrate microscopy with state-of-the-art optics technology, and these include spectral imaging, two photon fluorescence correlation, nonlinear nanoscopy; optical coherence tomography techniques allow functional, dynamic, nanoscale, and cross-sectional visualization. Moving to the macroscopic scale, spectroscopic assessment and imaging methods such as fluorescence and light scattering can provide diagnostics of tissue pathology including neoplastic changes. Techniques using light diffusion and photon migration are a means to explore processes which occur deep inside biological tissues and organs. The integration of these techniques with exogenous probes enables molecular specific sensitivity.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the optical analog of ultrasound imaging and is emerging as a powerful imaging technique that enables non-invasive, in vivo, high resolution, cross-sectional imaging in biological tissue. A new generation OCT technology has now been developed, representing a quantum leap in resolution and speed, achieving in vivo optical biopsy, i.e. the visualization of tissue architectural morphology in situ and in real time. Functional extensions of OCT technology enable non-invasive, depth resolved functional assessment and imaging of tissue. These new techniques should not only improve image contrast, but should also enable the differentiation of pathologies via metabolic properties or functional state. The book introduces OCT technology and applications not only from an optical and technological viewpoint, but also from biomedical and clinical perspectives. The chapters are written by leading international research groups, in a style comprehensible to a broad audience. It will be of interest not only to physicists, scientists and engineers, but also to biomedical and clinical researchers from different medical specialties.

Handbook Of Optical Fibre Sensing Technology written by José Miguel López-Higuera and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The pursuit of more efficient telecommunications has resulted in a major research push towards communication systems that are lighter, faster, more reliable and cheaper. This has given rise to great advances in devices and in fibre optics. A spin off of this research is the development of optical sensors, which use photonic materials and concepts. Optical sensors have wide-ranging applications in various fields including telecommunications, civil engineering, chemical industry, biomedical applications and the electrical power industry. This comprehensive handbook, written by a wide spectrum of leading international researchers, offers a clear understanding of the theory as well as focusing on the many practical applications throughout the industry. The book is organised into four main sections: - * Preliminary: Offers an overview of Fiber Optic Sensing Technology, the applications where it can be used successfully and also serves as an overall introduction to the handbook. This section also analyses current publications in the field. * Fundamentals of Photonics and Components for Sensing: Describes the photonic concepts and components needed in order to carried out the understanding, the design, and to realise photonic sensor systems. * Principles and Techniques for Sensing: Provides the principles and techniques in which the photonic sensing technology is based in order to understand how sensors work and how sensors can be made. * Applications: An ample overview of the developments which are successfully taking place in laboratory and field trials, as well as the available sensors in the current market and the future trends in this field. Applications are featured throughout the text, and this section focuses primarily on niche applications. This handbook would prove to be a valuable reference resource for researchers, engineers and postgraduate students in fibre optical sensing, as well as practising engineers in optical communications and electronic engineering, civil engineering, aerospace industry, biomedicine and robotics.
