Contemporary society is held together by interactive groups and teams carrying out work to accomplish various intentions and purposes often within challenging and ill-defined environments. Cooperative work is accomplished through the synergy of human teamwork and technological innovation within domains such as health and medicine; cyber security; transportation; command, control, communication, and intelligence; aviation; manufacturing; criminal justice; space exploration; and emergency crisis management. Distributed team cognition is ubiquitous across and within each of these domains in myriad ways. The Handbook of Distributed Team Cognition provides three volumes that delve into the intricacies of research findings in terms of how cognition is embodied within specific environments while being distributed across time, space, information, people, and technologies. Distributed team cognition is examined from broad, interdisciplinary perspectives and developed using different themes and worldviews. Foundations and Theoretical Perspectives of Distributed Teams Cognition provides an informed view of the history and foundations underlying the development of the field while looking at the theoretical significance of research. Contemporary Research: Models, Methodologies, and Measures in Distributed Team Cognition strengthens these foundations and theories by looking at how research has evolved through the use of different experiments, methods, measures, and models. Fields of Practice and Applied Solutions within Distributed Teams Cognition considers the importance of technological support of teamwork and what it means for applied systems and specific fields of practice. Together these three volumes entwine a comprehensive knowledge of distributed team cognition that is invaluable for professors, scientists, engineers, designers, specialists, and students alike who need specific information regarding history, cognitive science, experimental studies, research approaches, measures and analytics, digital collaborative technologies and intelligent agents, and real world applications; all of which have led to a dynamic revolution in cooperative work / teamwork in both theory and practice.

Many different cognitive research approaches have been generated to explore fields of practice where mutual teamwork is present and emergent. Results have shown subtle yet significant findings on how human actually work together and when they transition from their own individual roles and niches, into elements of teamwork and 'team-to-team' work. The is book explores advantages and show how researchers can obtain a deep understanding of users/teams entrenched in a particular field. Interdisciplinary perspectives and transformative intersections are provided. Delineates contextual nuances such socio-technical environments as influencers of team cognition Provides quantitative /qualitative perspectives of distributed team cognition demonstrating in situ interactions Reviews applied teamwork for fields of practice in medicine, cyber-security, education, aviation, and manufacturing Generates practical examples of distributed work and how cognition develops across teams using technologies Specifies applied solutions through technologies such as robots, agents, games, and social networks

Human Barrier Design And Lifecycle written by Tom Shephard and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-07 with Technology & Engineering categories.

A common source of failure in a human‐dependent barrier or safety critical task is a designed‐in mismatch error. The mismatch is a cognitive demand that exceeds the human capability to reliably and promptly respond to that demand given the plausible situations at that moment. Demand situations often include incomplete information, increased time pressures, and challenging environments. This book presents innovative solutions to reveal, prevent, and mitigate these and many other cognitive‐type errors in barriers and safety critical tasks. The comprehensive model and methodologies also provide insight into where and to what extent these barriers and task types may be significantly underspecified and the potential consequences. This title presents a new and comprehensive prototype design and lifecycle model specific to human‐dependent barriers and safety critical tasks. Designed to supplement current practice, the model is fully underpinned by cognitive ergonomics and cognitive science. The book also presents a compelling case for why a new global consensus standard specific to human‐dependent barriers is needed. Taking a novel approach, it presents its suggested basis, framing, and content. Both solutions seek to redress deficiencies in global regulations, standards, and practice. The model is guided by industry recommendations and best practice guidance and solutions from globally recognized experts. Its processes are fully explained and supported by examples, analysis, and well‐researched background materials. Real‐life case studies from offshore oil and gas, chemical manufacturing, transmission pipelines, and product storage provide further insight into how overt and latent design errors contributed to barrier degradation and failure and the consequence of those errors. An essential and fascinating read for professionals, Human Barrier Design and Lifecycle: A Cognitive Ergonomics Approach and Path Forward will appeal to those in the fields of human factors, process and technical safety, functional safety, display and safety system design, risk management, facility engineering, and facility operations and maintenance. This book explores the ethical, legal, and rights-related ramifications of the Hypothesis of Extended Cognition and the Extended Mind Thesis. Focusing on technologies designed to extend our cognitive and mental capacities, it highlights serious threats associated with their development and deployment—and examines potential strategies for addressing them. The discussion begins with an accessible introduction to the Hypothesis of Extended Cognition and the Extended Mind Thesis, responding to pressing objections and arguing that humans likely already are—or will soon become—cyborgs. Far from science fiction, the rapid advancement of extension technologies—such as invasive brain–computer interfaces—brings this scenario, and its disruptive consequences across ethics, rights, and the law, ever closer to reality. To underscore the stakes, the book focuses on key concerns relating to mental privacy, mental integrity, and extended forms of assault. It also outlines the values and factors we must consider as we transition into a world where the boundaries of the mind are increasingly fluid. Crucially, it argues that both legal and technological safeguards can be developed to mitigate the most troubling effects of cognitive and mental extension. Cyborg Rights is the first book to offer a systematic analysis of this emerging topic, situated at the intersection of the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, ethics, and philosophy of law.
