This handbook is a collection of elasticity solutions. Many of the results presented here cannot be found in textbooks and are available in scientific articles only. Some of them were obtained in the closed form quite recently. The solutions have been thoroughly checked and reduced to a "user friendly" form. Every effort has been made to keep the book free of misprints. The theory of elasticity is a mature field and a large number of solutions are available. We had to make choices in selecting material for this book. The emphasis is made on results relevant to general solid mechanics and materials science applications. Solutions related to structural mechanics (beams, plates, shells, etc.) are left out. The content is limited to the linear elasticity.

Handbook Of Contact Mechanics written by Valentin L. Popov and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-26 with Science categories.

This open access book contains a structured collection of the complete solutions of all essential axisymmetric contact problems. Based on a systematic distinction regarding the type of contact, the regime of friction and the contact geometry, a multitude of technically relevant contact problems from mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and medical engineering are discussed. In addition to contact problems between isotropic elastic and viscoelastic media, contact problems between transversal-isotropic elastic materials and functionally graded materials are addressed, too. The optimization of the latter is a focus of current research especially in the fields of actuator technology and biomechanics. The book takes into account adhesive effects which allow access to contact-mechanical questions about micro- and nano-electromechanical systems. Solutions of the contact problems include both the relationships between the macroscopic force, displacement and contact length, as well as the stress and displacement fields at the surface and, if appropriate, within the half-space medium. Solutions are always obtained with the simplest available method - usually with the method of dimensionality reduction (MDR) or approaches which use the solution of the non-adhesive normal contact problem to solve the respective contact problem.

Elasticity: Theory and Applications reviews the theory and applications of elasticity. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is concerned with the kinematics of continuous media; the second part focuses on the analysis of stress; and the third part considers the theory of elasticity and its applications to engineering problems. This book consists of 18 chapters; the first of which deals with the kinematics of continuous media. The basic definitions and the operations of matrix algebra are presented in the next chapter, followed by a discussion on the linear transformation of points. The study of finite and linear strains gradually introduces the reader to the tensor concept. Orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are examined in detail, along with the similarities between stress and strain. The chapters that follow cover torsion; the three-dimensional theory of linear elasticity and the requirements for the solution of elasticity problems; the method of potentials; and topics related to cylinders, disks, and spheres. This book also explores straight and curved beams; the semi-infinite elastic medium and some of its related problems; energy principles and variational methods; columns and beam-columns; and the bending of thin flat plates. The final chapter is devoted to the theory of thin shells, with emphasis on geometry and the relations between strain and displacement. This text is intended to give advanced undergraduate and graduate students sound foundations on which to build advanced courses such as mathematical elasticity, plasticity, plates and shells, and those branches of mechanics that require the analysis of strain and stress.

Elasticity: Theory, Applications, and Numerics, Fourth Edition, continues its market-leading tradition of concisely presenting and developing the linear theory of elasticity, moving from solution methodologies, formulations, and strategies into applications of contemporary interest, such as fracture mechanics, anisotropic and composite materials, micromechanics, nonhomogeneous graded materials, and computational methods. Developed for a one- or two-semester graduate elasticity course, this new edition has been revised with new worked examples and exercises, and new or expanded coverage of areas such as treatment of large deformations, fracture mechanics, strain gradient and surface elasticity theory, and tensor analysis. Using MATLAB software, numerical activities in the text are integrated with analytical problem solutions. Online ancillary support materials for instructors include a solutions manual, image bank, and a set of PowerPoint lecture slides. Provides a thorough yet concise introduction to linear elasticity theory and applications Offers detailed solutions to problems of nonhomogeneous/graded materials Features a comparison of elasticity solutions with elementary theory, experimental data, and numerical simulations Includes online solutions manual and downloadable MATLAB code

Written for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, this exceptionally clear text treats both the engineering and mathematical aspects of elasticity. It is especially useful because it offers the theory of linear elasticity from three standpoints: engineering, Cartesian tensor, and vector-dyadic. In this way the student receives a more complete picture and a more thorough understanding of engineering elasticity. Prerequisites are a working knowledge of statics and strength of materials plus calculus and vector analysis. The first part of the book treats the theory of elasticity by the most elementary approach, emphasizing physical significance and using engineering notations. It gives engineering students a clear, basic understanding of linear elasticity. The latter part of the text, after Cartesian tensor and dyadic notations are introduced, gives a more general treatment of elasticity. Most of the equations of the earlier chapters are repeated in Cartesian tensor notation and again in vector-dyadic notation. By having access to this threefold approach in one book, beginning students will benefit from cross-referencing, which makes the learning process easier. Another helpful feature of this text is the charts and tables showing the logical relationships among the equations--especially useful in elasticity, where the mathematical chain from definition and concept to application is often long. Understanding of the theory is further reinforced by extensive problems at the end of of each chapter.

This book serves as a core text for university curricula in solid body mechanics and, at the same time, examines the main achievements of state of the art research in the mechanics of elastic and non-elastic materials. This latter goal of the book is achieved through rich bibliographic references, many from the authors’ own work. authors. Distinct from similar texts, there are no claims in this volume to a single universal theory of plasticity. However, solutions are given to some new problems and to the construction of models useful both in pedagogic terms for students and practical terms for professional design engineers. Examples include the authors’ decisions about the Brazilian test, stability of rock exposure, and pile foundations. Designed for both upper-level university students and specialists in the mechanics of deformable hard body, the material in this book serves as a source for numerous topics of course and diploma concentration.
