Environmental Sciences and Applications, Volume 6: Handbook of Environmental Data and Ecological Parameters presents the biological effects of chemical compounds and the physical environment. This book provides a list of the most important compounds from an environmental point of view. Organized into seven parts, this volume begins with an overview of the living organisms in the natural environment. This text then explores the ecosphere, including the element cycles and general properties of chemical compound in the ecosphere. Other parts consider the biological half life time of various chemical compounds and present the toxicological data of specific importance to environmental problems. This book discusses as well the chemical compounds that are related to species. The final part deals with the dynamics of environment and contains equilibrium data, which is often the point of departure for a dynamical description. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, biologists, ecologists, scientists, and research workers.

It has become clear over the last decade that it is not possible to solve environmental problems in a simplistic fashion: the complex nature of the matter requires quantification. Environmental science and ecology have, thus, become a quantitative science because of the need for, e.g., estimations of environmental impacts, effects of pollution and evaluation of environmental data on residue levels, etc. The development of computers has made it feasible to handle such complexes as ecosystems with many interacting variables and processes. There are many handbooks available in chemistry and physics, but this is the first one for ecology and environmental sciences allowing one to carry out estimations and calculations. With over 2,100 tables, organized in seven sections, this book thus aims to fill a gap in the current literature by providing extensive tables, data and parameters needed by modellers, theoretical scientists, environmental managers, ecologists, toxicologists, and so forth. Original references are given for all data as the user may wish to critically evaluate the basis for the data. A comprehensive index has been included to facilitate the use of this handbook.

At the heart of environmental protection is risk assessment: thelikelihood of pollution from accidents; the likelihood of problemsfrom normal and abnormal operation of industrial processes; thelikely impacts associated with new synthetic chemicals; and so on.Currently, risk assessment has been very much in the news--therisks from BSE and E. coli, and the public perception of risks fromnuclear waste, etc. This new publication explains how scientificmethodologies are used to assess risk from human activities and theresultant objects and wastes, on people and the environment.Understanding such risks supplies crucial information--to framelegislation, manage major habitats, businesses and industries, andcreate development programmes. Unique in combining the science of risk assessment with thedevelopment of management strategies. Covers science and social science (politics, economics, psychology) aspects. Very timely - risk assessment lies at the heart of decisionmaking in various topical environmental questions (BSE, Brent Spar, nuclear waste).

Modelling In Ecotoxicology written by S.E. Jorgensen and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Science categories.
Ecotoxicology is the science of toxic substances in the environment and their impact on living organisms. Today we use many more chemicals in everyday life than we did 30-40 years ago. Our knowledge of the fate and effect of such chemicals in the environment has not yet followed the rate of chemical innovation in spite of our expanding knowledge of ecotoxicology. About 50,000 different chemicals are produced on an industrial scale, but we have only sufficient data to evaluate the environmental consequences of a few per cent of these. The need for ecotoxicological knowledge has never been more pronounced than it is today. Even more resources must be allocated in this field in the near future, if we are to be able to cope with the threat of more toxic chemical compounds in our environment. This book outlines the state of the art of modelling the fate and effects of toxic substances in the environment. Modelling in ecotoxicology differs from modelling in other fields by the great lack of data. The quality of the models is very dependent on the parameters used, and as we do not have a wide knowledge of parameters in ecotoxicological processes, good parameter estimation methods are crucial for ecotoxicolocal models. A comprehensive review of available parameter estimation methods is therefore included in this volume. Model examples and case studies have also been included to illustrate the difficulties and short comings in practical modelling.

Areography written by Eduardo H Rapoport and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Science categories.
Areography: Geographical Strategies of Species discusses the hypotheses and results of areography, which is the study of geographical range of species. The book consists of six chapters, which help demonstrates that the geographical range of species can be studied and can help provide a methodology to analyze the spatio-geographic strategies of species. The first chapter provides an introductory discussion on areography; the chapter also covers several issues, concerns, and criticisms on areography. Chapter 2 discusses the anatomy and morphology of areas, while Chapter 3 covers the methodological approaches. The fourth chapter tackles the concept of barriers. Chapters 5 and 6 discuss geographical and ecological areography, respectively. The text will be of great use to researchers who are involved or have an interest in areography.

Chemical Kinetics and Process Dynamics in Aquatic Systems is devoted to chemical reactions and biogeochemical processes in aquatic systems. The book provides a thorough analysis of the principles, mathematics, and analytical tools used in chemical, microbial, and reactor kinetics. It also presents a comprehensive, up-to-date description of the kinetics of important chemical processes in aquatic environments. Aquatic photochemistry and correlation methods (e.g., LFERs and QSARs) to predict process rates are covered. Numerous examples are included, and each chapter has a detailed bibliography and problems sets. The book will be an excellent text/reference for professionals and students in such fields as aquatic chemistry, limnology, aqueous geochemistry, microbial ecology, marine science, environmental and water resources engineering, and geochemistry.
