Excerpt from Handbook of Gardening for New Zealand: With Chapters on Poultry and Bee-Keeping In compiling this little work on "Gardening in New Zealand" an attempt has been made to collect the greatest amount of useful information which could be condensed within its limits, at the same time rendering such information as full and practicable as possible, so that the most inexperienced may with its assistance carry on the various operations of the several departments of the garden with every prospect of success. I do not claim much originality for the work, except in so far as my own experience, extending over many years in the Old Country and in the Colonies, enables me to determine the difference between the Home seasons and those of this country. Although we are at the antipodes of England, it does not follow that the seasons are exactly opposite. In New Zealand the growing season extends over a period of nine months, while in England it may be said not to exceed seven months. Up to the present time no attempt has been made to produce a comprehensive manual of Gardening suitable to our requirements. It is true that calendars abound, and weekly instructions, but these fragmentary efforts (good so far as they go) do not enter sufficiently into details to be of much service to those persons who know little of the subject, but who, nevertheless, take pleasure in the growth of flowers, fruit, and vegetables. Much of the information embraced in the chapters of this work has been gleaned from the best authorities on the subjects treated of. Gardening is the most popular hobby in the world and gardeners the most sociable and generous of people, only too happy to pass on a few seeds and cuttings of this and that. But how often do your seedlings fail to thrive or your cuttings, stuck hopefully into the ground, fail to develop successfully? Often it seems the only way to obtain a desirable plant is to visit the nearest garden center--and you always come home with more than you intended to buy! This book will help you find an alternative to buying all your new plants. It describes basic, commercially proven methods of plant propagation that take advantage of modern horticultural research and developments, and it gives details of the best methods for reproducing over 600 specific plants. With some simple, inexpensive equipment, a little patience and some practice, a whole new range of possibilities will open up for you. Learning how to raise your own plants from seeds or cuttings and discovering the nurseryman's techniques of grafting, layering and division will not only save you money but could well develop into a new and absorbing hobby--and a beautifully planted garden.

Managing Pests And Diseases written by Rob Lucas and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10 with Garden pests categories.

Managing Pests and Diseases: A Handbook for New Zealand Gardeners is a completely revised edition of Rob Lucas's successful publication What's That Pest? It provides New Zealand's horticulturalists and gardeners with a simple, comprehensive, easily-used reference guide to pest identification and control. The photographic content has been significantly increased to aid identification, and much of the text has been updated, with several new sections added. The book covers the many garden and nursery production pests of bedding plants, houseplants, vegetables, fruit trees and ornamental trees and shrubs, including natives, as well as the disease-causing pathogens - fungi, bacteria and viruses. It includes examples of beneficials (predators and parasites of pests) and where appropriate, more examples of pest and disease symptoms. Rob Lucas actively promotes a holistic approach to pest control and stresses appropriate alternatives to pesticides where these are available and feasible. To develop this further he has included a new section that sets out the key principles and controls appropriate to organic growing.Managing Pests and Diseases is an essential reference book for all home gardeners, horticultural students, growers and garden centre staff.
