Neurocritical care is a multidisciplinary specialty that provides comprehensive management for all life-threatening disorders of the central nervous system and their complications. Increased understanding of the pathophysiology of acute central nervous system disorders and their impact on systemic organ systems, in association with advances in neuromonitoring and neuroimaging techniques, has led to the introduction of more effective and individualised treatment strategies that have translated into improved outcomes for critically ill neurological patients. As well as treatments targeted to the acute neurological disorder, critically ill neurological patients require meticulous general intensive care support to maintain systemic physiological stability and optimize neurological outcomes. The second edition of the Oxford Textbook of Neurocritical Care brings together international experts from various disciplines to provide a comprehensive global perspective on this field. In 33 updated or new chapters, the book discusses the pathophysiology of acute neurological conditions, advancements in monitoring and imaging techniques, evidenced-based treatment strategies, prognostication, patient outcomes, and ethics. Each chapter highlights advancements within specific areas and underscores the critical attention to detail that is the basis of neurocritical care practice. While primarily designed for those in the neurocritical care field, this textbook also serves as a valuable resource for other clinical professionals who encounter patients with acute neurological conditions in their practice. It is also a useful resource for trainees from many disciplines

Optimal care of children with neurocritical illness often involves multi-specialty collaboration, and recent years have seen a substantial expansion in the availability of data to guide acute care. This book addresses overall approaches to children with neurocritical illness and the management of specific conditions. It offers up-to-date, concise, and clinically relevant guidance to clinicians providing acute care to children with neurologic disorders. Reflecting the spectrum of specialties involved in pediatric neurocritical care, contributors are drawn from the fields of critical care medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine, and many affiliated specialties. The chapters in this book are authored by experts in each individual topic, and co-edited by a neurologist and intensivist to ensure all topics have been fully addressed from both perspectives. The initial chapters focus on assessment and management of common conditions such as coma, headache, and elevated intracranial pressure. The middle chapters cover assessment and management of specific conditions including traumatic brain injury, demyelinating disorders, stroke subtypes, central nervous system disorders, and more. The final chapters of the book address ethical and psychological aspects of acute neurocritical illness. The complete continuum of care is discussed, from assessment, monitoring, and condition-specific management of specific problems through rehabilitation and end of life considerations.

Brain injury is a worldwide leading cause of mortality and morbidity and requires early and appropriate management to minimize these adverse sequelae. Despite such needs, access to specialist centers is limited, forcing both immediate and secondary care of these patients onto generalist staff. These responsibilities are made more problematical by differences in patient management between and even within specialist centers, due in part to an insuffcient evidence-base for many interventions directed at brain injury. This book is borne out of the above observations and is targeted at em- gency and acute medicine, anesthetic and general intensive care staff caring for brain injury of diverse etiology, or surgical teams responsible for the inpatient care of minor to moderate head trauma. Although explaining the various facets of specialist care, the book is not intended to compete with texts directed at neurosciences staff, but aims to advise on optimal care in general hospitals, including criteria for transfer, by a combination of narrative on pathophysiology, principles of care, templates for documentation, and highly specifc algorithms for particular problems. It is intended that the content and structure can form the basis of guidelines and protocols that refect the needs of individual units and that can be constantly refned. Our ultimate goal is to promote informed, consistent, auditable, multidisciplinary care for this cohort of patients and we hope that this text contributes to that process.
