As the volume of global Internet traffic increases, the Internet is beginning to suffer from a broad spectrum of performance-degrading infrastructural limitations that threaten to jeopardize the continued growth of new, innovative services. In answer to this challenge, computer scientists seek to maintain the original design principles of the Internet while allowing for a more dynamic approach to the manner in which networks are designed and operated. The Handbook of Research on Redesigning the Future of Internet Architectures covers some of the hottest topics currently being debated by the Internet community at large, including Internet governance, privacy issues, service delivery automation, advanced networking schemes, and new approaches to Internet traffic-forwarding and path-computation mechanics. Targeting students, network-engineers, and technical strategists, this book seeks to provide a broad and comprehensive look at the next wave of revolutionary ideas poised to reshape the very foundation of the Internet as we know it.

Designing An Internet written by David D. Clark and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-30 with Computers categories.

Why the Internet was designed to be the way it is, and how it could be different, now and in the future. How do you design an internet? The architecture of the current Internet is the product of basic design decisions made early in its history. What would an internet look like if it were designed, today, from the ground up? In this book, MIT computer scientist David Clark explains how the Internet is actually put together, what requirements it was designed to meet, and why different design decisions would create different internets. He does not take today's Internet as a given but tries to learn from it, and from alternative proposals for what an internet might be, in order to draw some general conclusions about network architecture. Clark discusses the history of the Internet, and how a range of potentially conflicting requirements—including longevity, security, availability, economic viability, management, and meeting the needs of society—shaped its character. He addresses both the technical aspects of the Internet and its broader social and economic contexts. He describes basic design approaches and explains, in terms accessible to nonspecialists, how networks are designed to carry out their functions. (An appendix offers a more technical discussion of network functions for readers who want the details.) He considers a range of alternative proposals for how to design an internet, examines in detail the key requirements a successful design must meet, and then imagines how to design a future internet from scratch. It's not that we should expect anyone to do this; but, perhaps, by conceiving a better future, we can push toward it.

For the past couple of years, network automation techniques that include software-defined networking (SDN) and dynamic resource allocation schemes have been the subject of a significant research and development effort. Likewise, network functions virtualization (NFV) and the foreseeable usage of a set of artificial intelligence techniques to facilitate the processing of customers’ requirements and the subsequent design, delivery, and operation of the corresponding services are very likely to dramatically distort the conception and the management of networking infrastructures. Some of these techniques are being specified within standards developing organizations while others remain perceived as a “buzz” without any concrete deployment plans disclosed by service providers. An in-depth understanding and analysis of these approaches should be conducted to help internet players in making appropriate design choices that would meet their requirements as well as their customers. This is an important area of research as these new developments and approaches will inevitably reshape the internet and the future of technology. Design Innovation and Network Architecture for the Future Internet sheds light on the foreseeable yet dramatic evolution of internet design principles and offers a comprehensive overview on the recent advances in networking techniques that are likely to shape the future internet. The chapters provide a rigorous in-depth analysis of the promises, pitfalls, and other challenges raised by these initiatives, while avoiding any speculation on their expected outcomes and technical benefits. This book covers essential topics such as content delivery networks, network functions virtualization, security, cloud computing, automation, and more. This book will be useful for network engineers, software designers, computer networking professionals, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students looking for a comprehensive research book on the latest advancements in internet design principles and networking techniques.

A new way to understand the architecture of today's Internet, based on an innovative general model of network architecture that is rigorous, realistic, and modular This book meets the long-standing need for an explanation of how the Internet's architecture has evolved since its creation to support an ever-broader range of the world's communication needs. The authors introduce a new model of network architecture that exploits a powerful form of modularity to provide lucid, insightful descriptions of complex structures, functions, and behaviors in today's Internet. Countering the idea that the Internet's architecture is "ossified" or rigid, this model--which is presented through hundreds of examples rather than mathematical notation--encompasses the Internet's original or "classic" architecture, its current architecture, and its possible future architectures. For practitioners, the book offers a precise and realistic approach to comparing design alternatives and guiding the ongoing evolution of their applications, technologies, and security practices. For educators and students, the book presents patterns that recur in many variations and in many places in the Internet ecosystem. Each pattern tells a compelling story, with a common problem to be solved and a range of solutions for solving it. For researchers, the book suggests many directions for future research that exploit modularity to simplify, optimize, and verify network implementations without loss of functionality or flexibility.
