Artificial Intelligence-Based 6G Networking focuses exclusively on the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) network and services slated for implementation by 2030. It explores the paradigm shift that is 6G. It discusses the deep integration of computing and communication, supported by artificial intelligence (AI) across network elements like cloud, edge, and terminals. It also examines how AI-native interfaces will permeate various network components, from radio access networks to application servers and databases. Proposing a unified AI-enabled framework for optimizing networks and applications as a single integrated system, the book covers how network service providers can tailor network baselines, reduce noise, and accurately identify issues. The book delves into the potential of AI-driven networks to self-correct, predict, and rectify service degradations proactively, enhancing uptime and troubleshooting efficiency. It outlines the “Connection, Communication, Collaboration, Curation, and Community” framework to enhance network effects, aiding operators in automation, cost reduction, and providing optimal user experiences. Covering topics from MIMO and Massive MIMO to holographic communications, cybersecurity and quantum communications, the book explores cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of 6G networks. It anticipates a future where AI, along with machine learning and deep learning, enables continuous learning, self-optimization, and predictive maintenance, even with full automation, that will be the hallmark of a new era in network connectivity and innovation.

The integration of fifth generation (5G) wireless technologies with distributed artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming network operations. AI is increasingly embedded in all network elements, from cloud and edge to terminal devices, enabling AI to function as a networking system. This convergence facilitates AI-based applications across the global network, with notable successes in various domains such as computer vision, natural language processing, and healthcare. Networked Artificial Intelligence: AI-Enabled 5G Networking a comprehensive framework for the deep integration of computing and communications, optimizing networks and applications as a unified system using AI. The book covers topics ranging from networked AI fundamentals to AI-enabled 5G networks, including agent modeling, machine learning (ML) algorithms, and network protocol architectures. It discusses how network service providers can leverage AI and ML techniques to customize network baselines, reduce noise, and accurately identify issues. It also looks at AI-driven networks that enable self-correction for maximum uptime and prescriptive actions for issue resolution, as well as troubleshooting by capturing and storing data before network events. The book presents a comprehensive approach to AI-enabled networking that offers unprecedented opportunities for efficiency, reliability, and innovation in telecommunications. It works through the approach’s five steps of connection, communication, collaboration, curation, and community. These steps enhance network effects, empowering operators with insights for trusted automation, cost reduction, and optimal user experiences. The book also discusses AI and ML capabilities that enable networks to continuously learn, self-optimize, and predict and rectify service degradations proactively, even with full automation.

The first International Workshop on Interactive Distributed Multimedia Systems and Telecommunication Services (IDMS) was organized by Prof. K. Rothermel and Prof. W. Effelsberg, and took place in Stuttgart in 1992. It had the form of a national forum for discussion on multimedia issues related to communications. The succeeding event was "attached" as a workshop to the German Computer Science Conference (GI Jahrestagung) in 1994 in Hamburg, organized by Prof. W. Lamersdorf. The chairs of the third IDMS, E. Moeller and B. Butscher, enhanced the event to become a very successful international meeting in Berlin in March 1996. This short overview on the first three IDMS events is taken from the preface of the IDMS’97 proceedings (published by Springer as Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Volume 1309), written by Ralf Steinmetz and Lars Wolf. Both, Ralf Steinmetz as general chair and Lars Wolf as program chair of IDMS’97, organized an excellent international IDMS in Darmstadt. Since 1998, IDMS has moved from Germany to other European cities to emphasize the international character it had gained in the previous years. IDMS’98 was organized in Oslo by Vera Goebel and Thomas Plagemann at UniK – Center for Technology at Kjeller, University of Oslo. Michel Diaz, Phillipe Owezarski, and Patrick Sénac successfully organized the sixth IDMS event, again outside Germany. IDMS'99 took place in Toulouse at ENSICA. IDMS 2000 continued the tradition and was hosted in Enschede, the Netherlands.

The last two years have seen significant developments in the standardization of GMPLS and its implementation in optical and other networks. GMPLS: Architecture and Applications brings you completely up to date, providing the practical information you need to put the growing set of GMPLS-supported services to work and manage them effectively. This book begins by defining GMPLS’s place in a transport network, leveraging your knowledge of MPLS to give you an understanding of this radically new control plane technology. An overview of GMPLS protocols follows, but the real focus is on what comes afterwards: in-depth examinations of the architectures underpinning GMPLS in real-world network environments and current and emerging GMPLS applications. This one-of-a-kind resource delivers immensely useful information for software architects, designers and programmers, hardware developers, system testers, and network operators--and also for managers and other decision-makers. Written by two industry researchers at the forefront of the development of GMPLS. Provides a practical look at GMPLS protocols for signaling, routing, link and resource management, and traffic engineering. Delves deep into the world of GMPLS applications, including traffic engineering, path computation, layer one VPNs, point-to-multipoint connectivity, service management, and resource protection. Explores three distinct GMPLS control plane architectures: peer, overlay, and hybrid, and explains the GMPLS UNI and NNIs. Explains how provisioning challenges can be met in multi-region networks and details the provisioning systems and tools relied on by the GMPLS control plane, along with the standard MIB modules used to manage a GMPLS system.
