Excerpt from Handbuch der Kirchlichen Kunst-Archäologie des Deutschen Mittelalters, Vol. 1 Durch die grundlose Barmherzigkeit unseres Gottes war ich im stande das Ganze für diese neue Auflage sorgsam zu revidieren und kormte die eigentliche Arbeit auf treue jüngere Schultern legen; wenn ich nun im bald vollendeten 7 5 sten Lebensjahre so glücklich bin, wenig stens den Anfang dieser neuen Auflage eines Werkes, in dem ein gutes Teil meines Lebens steckt, noch selbst dem femeren Wohlwollen und der bisherigen Nachsicht der Freunde christlicher Kunst empfehlen zu dürfen, so habe ich dies nachst Gott meinem lieben Bundesgenossen, Herrn Oberpfarmr E. Wernicke in Loburg zu verdanken. Seines Einverständnisses gewifs schliefse ich mit den letzten Worten der Vor rede zur vorigen Auflage: Mit meiner Liebe zur Sache ist auch mein theoretischer Standpunkt derselbe geblieben und hat sich im Laufe der Jahre noch mehr befestigt: in den ersten Setzen der Einleitung habe ich mich 'näher darüber aus gesprochen. Die Freunde meines Buches aus der katholischen Kirche, deren es zu meiner grefsen Freude gar manche und wackere gefunden hat, konnen von einem evangelischen Theologen nichts anderes, in ihrem Sinne Besseres, erwarten. Zu konfessioneller Polemik habe ich bei aller Entschiedenheit meiner protestantischen Gesinnung auf diesem Gebiete weder Beruf noch Neigung, mufs aber einer gewissen modernen Strö mung in der evangelischen Kirche gegeniiber nachdrucklichst betonen, dafs ich durch meine Bestrebungen romanistischen Tendenzen irgend Vor schub zu leisten durchaus nicht gewiflt bin. Within the context of globalization, cultural transformations are increasingly analyzed as hybridization processes.
