Das Handbuch behandelt ‚Diskurs‘ als linguistisches Konzept. Mit theoretischer Verankerung in einer Diskursanalyse nach Foucault ist darunter ein unauflösbarer Zusammenhang von linguistischen Aussagen und Praxisformen der Sprache zu verstehen, die Wissen gleichermaßen referenzieren und konstruieren. Da Diskurs aber nicht nur ein systematischer Terminus zur Hierarchisierung des sprachlichen Konstituentensystems ist, sondern auch und je nach Konzeption vor allem eine transversale Dimension der Sprache und ihrer Analyse bezeichnet, ergeben sich aus diskurslinguistischen Erkenntnisinteressen vielfältige innerdisziplinäre und interdisziplinäre Bezüge. Das Handbuch reflektiert diese Bezüge in vier Teilen. In Teil I. werden Basiskonzepte und Anschlusstheorien vorgestellt. In II. wird die Frage nach angemessenen Methoden der Diskurslinguistik durch sechs grundlegende methodische Angebote behandelt. In III. werden linguistische Ansätze der Analyse von Diskursen als dynamische, heterogene und auch agonale Konstellationen dargestellt. In Teil IV. wird die Materialität des Diskurses als wissensbezogene Kodierung von sozialen Aushandlungen und Überzeugungen behandelt. Der Band erfasst damit die gesamte aktuelle Diskussion der Diskurslinguistik.

With attention to the methodological questions that arise from the attempt to study such changes empirically, it offers new theoretical foundations for understanding the social construction and reconstruction of spaces through communicative action. Seeing communicative action as the basic element in the social construction of reality and conceptualizing communication not only in terms of the use of language and texts, but as involving any kind of objectification, such as technologies, bodies and non-verbal signs, it considers the roles of both direct and mediatized (or digitized) communication. An examination of the conceptualization of the communicative (re-)construction of spaces and the means by which this change might be empirically investigated, this book demonstrates the fruitfulness of the notion of refiguration as a means by which to understand the transformation of contemporary societies. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, social theorists, and geographers with interests in social construction and urban space.

This book addresses the highly differentiated spatial, social, cultural and demographic structure(s) of Germany, with a particular focus on the reciprocal relations between different levels of spatial development. The historical development of Germany serves as a background in order to provide context for the development of spatially relevant ideas and ideals (whether in relation to politics, landscape, or culture). In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific ‘German’ trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear. A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments. Efforts to tackle current challenges, such as adapting to climate change and mitigating it, or securing raw materials, also become apparent. The complexity of spatial processes in Germany is illustrated in case study regions dealing with the challenges of structural change in traditional industrial regions (such as the Ruhr area), or e.g. efforts of Berlin to position and find itself as the capital of a unified Germany. Overall, the book shows how theory-driven regional geographic research can make spatiotemporal complexities tangible and comprehensible.

The annual meeting of the ARLs Junges Forum forum for young professionals on 6-8 October 2016 in Leipzig addressed various aspects of the energy transition-when, where, how and why? In presentations and discussion groups, they considered not only technical, legal and planning aspects related to infrastructure expansion and the management and structuring of the energy transition, but also its significance for spatial development. The focus of the annual meeting was selected in view of the current importance of the issue. The transition is a process intended to ensure a safe, environmentally friendly and economically successful future and as such involves a broad spectrum of social, planning and scientific challenges and opportunities that require more in-depth consideration and analysis. The following questions thus provided the starting points for the presentations: What are the key action areas for the implementation of the energy transition? How will the cities and the countryside of the future look? How do the various actors behave and how do they react to different technologies? Where and why do conflicts and competition emerge and how can resistance and acceptance be dealt with? These key questions were the focus of the annual meeting and informed the following themes: How smart is the city of the future?
