Der Trend der internationalen Forschung hin zu Fragen, die nicht allein im Rahmen nationaler Geschichten beantwortet werden können, scheint ungebrochen. Während die Zahl der Angebote von transnationalisierten Nationalgeschichten einzelner Staaten ständig steigt, sind Versuche in Richtung von Transnationalisierungsgeschichten ganzer Regionen mit mehreren Staaten und Nationen noch nicht in Angriff genommen worden. Diese Lücke für Ostmitteleuropa zu schließen, ist Anliegen des Buches. Im Zentrum des ersten Bandes dieser auf drei Bände angelegten transnationalen Geschichte Ostmitteleuropas steht die Zeit von der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg.Behandelt werden fünf Dimensionen, in denen die Transnationalität der zwischen Ostsee und Adria, Deutschland und Russland zu verortenden Geschichtsregion zu beobachten ist: 1. die De- und Reterritorialisierungen in der Region einschließlich der kulturellen und politischen Reaktionen auf neue Raumordnungen, 2. die Migrationen aus, durch und in die Region, 3. die wirtschaftlichen Verflechtungen, transnationalen Marktbeziehungen und Infrastrukturen, 4. kulturelle Grenzüberschreitungen und Kulturtransfers, 5. die Vertretung der Region im System der Internationalen Organisationen und Netzwerke transnationaler Akteure. Jedes Kapitel stellt einerseits den spezifischen Transnationalisierungsaspekt auf der Basis empirischer Befunde dar, andererseits diskutiert es mit Blick auf den internationalen Forschungsstand weiterführende Forschungsfragen. Die methodische Debatte und die empirischen Einzelforschungen der transnationalen Geschichte sind weit vorangeschritten. Dieser Band bietet die erste zusammenfassende Darstellung.

Tracing multiple mobilities, entangled borderlands, microhistory and space, and human and nonhuman actors, Jan Musekamp demonstrates how an inner-Prussian railroad line turned into a transnational force, overcoming borders and connecting Europeans in a time of rising nationalism. Shifting Lines, Entangled Borderlands investigates the dichotomy between a globalizing world and tighter border control in nineteenth-century Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on the Royal Prussian Eastern Railroad (Ostbahn) between the 1830s and 1930s. The line was initially planned as a major internal modernizing project to connect Prussia's capital of Berlin to East Prussia's provincial capital of Königsberg (today's Kaliningrad). Soon, the Ostbahn connected to the growing Imperial Russian railroad network, thus becoming a backbone of European East–West transportation in trade, tourism, technological exchange, and migration. The First World War temporarily disrupted and reconfigured existing networks, adapting them to new political regimes and borders. However, World War II and its aftermath altered mobility patterns more permanently, dividing not only the Ostbahn tracks but the whole continent for decades to come. From border towns and major cities to unique structures, such as stations or bridges, this volume analyzes the obvious and not-so-obvious nodes of the Central and Eastern European rail network—and the spaces in between.

This collectively written monograph is the first work to provide a broad history of the relationship between Eastern Europe and the decolonising world. It ranges from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century, but at its core is the dynamic of the post-1945 period, when socialism's importance as a globalising force accelerated and drew together what contemporaries called the 'Second' and 'Third Worlds'. At the centre of this history is the encounter between the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe on one hand, and a wider world casting off European empires or struggling against western imperialism on the other. The origins of these connections are traced back to new forms of internationalism enabled by the Russian Revolution; the interplay between the first 'decolonisation' of the twentieth century in Eastern Europe and rising anti-colonial movements; and the global rise of fascism, which created new connections between East and South. The heart of the study, however, lies in the Cold War, when these contacts and relationships dramatically intensified. A common embrace of socialist modernisation and anti-imperial culture opened up possibilities for a new and meaningful exchange between the peripheries of Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Such linkages are examined across many different fields - from health to archaeology, economic development to the arts - and through many people - from students to experts to labour migrants - who all helped to shape a different form and meaning of globalisation.
