"This work is an innovative treatise on the evangelical magazine market during the 1970s and 1980s and how it sustained religious community and ideology. Bassimir argues that community can be produced in discourse, especially when shared rhetoric, concepts, and perspectives signal belonging. The 1970s and 1980s were a tumultuous period in United States history. In suit with a dramatic political shift to the right, evangelicalism also entered the public discourse as a distinct religious movement and was immediately besieged by cultural appropriations and internal fragmentations. This was also a time when Americans in general and evangelicals in particular grappled with issues and ideas such as feminism and legal abortion, restructuring traditional roles for women and the family. The Watergate Crisis and the newly emerging Christian Right also threw politics into turmoil. During this time, there was a surge of readership for evangelical magazines such as Christian Today, Moody Monthly, Eternity, and Post-Americans/Sojourners. While each of these magazines-and many other publications-contributes to and participates in the overall dissemination of evangelical ideology, they all also have their own outlooks and political leanings when it comes to hot-button issues. Evangelical Visions, through a thoroughly researched lens, makes important correctives to common understandings of evangelical discourse, particularly regarding the key political initiatives of the religious right. Bassimir demonstrates that within the pages of these periodicals, evangelicals hashed out a number of competing views on feminism, abortion, reproductive technologies, and political involvement itself. To accomplish this, Evangelical Visions traces the emergence of evangelical social and political awareness in the 1970s to the height of its power as a political program. The chapters in this monograph also delve into such topics as how evangelicals re-envisioned gender norms and relations in light of the feminist movement and the use of childhood as a symbol of unspoiled innocence and the pure potential of humanity. Presently, most accounts of evangelicalism cite evangelical magazines only very selectively, and virtually no studies make substantive use of those magazines as objects of investigation. Bassimir's Evangelical Visions makes a much needed contribution to our understanding of evangelicalism in the late twentieth century by providing a nuanced picture of a religious subculture that is too often reduced to caricature. This study is located at the intersection of history, religious studies, and media studies and will appeal to scholars and students of all of these fields"--

Arabischsprachige Evangelikale in Israel stehen in einem komplexen Identitätskonflikt: Sie sind israelisch, aber nicht jüdisch, arabisch und palästinensisch, aber nicht muslimisch, christlich, aber nicht traditionell-christlich, sondern evangelikal. Diesen Identitätskonflikt untersucht die Studie mittels in Nazareth erhobener ethnographischer Daten, die sie auf ihre Vorgeschichte und globale Verflechtung hin befragt. Sie zeigt auf, dass sich die arabischsprachigen Evangelikalen in Israel mit ihrer Hervorhebung des Glaubens und intensiven Frömmigkeit nicht dem Konflikt und der Welt entziehen, sondern eine aktive Kritik vorbringen, insbesondere an dem christlich-evangelikalen Zionismus und der Politisierung von Religion in Israel. "This book provides a transnational history of Billy Graham's revival work in the 1950s, zooming in on his revival meetings in London (1954), Berlin (1954/1960), and New York (1957). It shows how Graham's international ministry took shape in the context of trans-Atlantic debates about the place and future of religion in public life after the experiences of war and at the onset of the Cold War, and through a constant exchange of people, ideas, and practices. It explores the transnational nature of debates about the religious underpinnings of the "Free World" and sheds new light on the contested relationship between business, consumerism, and religion. In the context of Graham's revival meetings, ordinary Christians, theologians, ministers and Church leaders in the United States, Germany, and the UK discussed, experienced, and came to terms with religious modernization and secular anxieties, Cold War culture and the rise of consumerism. The transnational connectedness of their political, economic, and spiritual hopes and fears brings a narrative to life that complicates our understanding of the different secularization paths the United States, the UK, and Germany embarked on in the 1950s. During Graham's altar call in Europe, the contours of a trans-Atlantic revival become visible, even if in the long run it was unable to develop a dynamism that could have sustained this moment in these different national and religious contexts"--

Why are historically Catholic countries and regions generally more corrupt and less competitive than historically Protestant ones? How has institutionalization of religion influenced the prosperity of countries in Europe and the Americas? This open access book addresses these critical questions by elucidating the hegemonic and emancipatory religious factors leading to these dissimilarities between countries. The book features up-to-date mixed methods from interdisciplinary research contributing to existing studies in the sociology of religion field by demonstrating—for the first time—the effect of the mutually reinforcing configuration of multiple prosperity triggers (religion–politics–environment). It demonstrates the differences in the institutionalization of Roman Catholicism and Protestantism by applying quantitative and qualitative methods and by performing a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) of 65 countries. The author also provides a comprehensive survey and results of empirical research on different theories of development, focusing on the influence of religion.

Sie eruiert theologische Grundmotive, formuliert konkrete Implikationen und skizziert eine lebensverbindliche Theologie und Kirche. Marquardt hofft nämlich auf einen lebendigen Gott, weil Israel den Holocaust überlebt hat. Deshalb müssen sich auch Theologie und Kirche am lebendigen Israel orientieren. Diese Lebensverbindlichkeit wird hervorgehoben, problematisiert und konkretisiert. So liefert die Arbeit einen wichtigen Beitrag für den jüdisch-christlichen Dialog. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass Marquardt im Hörverhältnis zu Israel eine Gotteslehre entfaltet, die existenziell israelverbindlich ist: Christliche Theologie lernt von Israel und hofft so auf einen neu Leben schaffenden Gott.
