Zaeh, born in 1963, has been and is Professor for and Manufacturing Technology since 2002 and, together with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gunther Reinhart, Head of the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM). After studying general mechanical engineering, he was doctoral candidate under Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Milberg at TUM from 1990 until 1993 and received his doctorate in 1993. From 1994 to 1995, he was department leader under Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gunther Reinhart. From 1996 to 2002, he worked for a machine tool manufacturer in several positions, most recently as a member of the extended management. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael F. Zaeh is an associated member of the CIRP and member of acatech, WGP and WLP. His current researches include among others Joining and Cutting Technologies like Laser Cutting and Welding as well as Friction Stir Welding, Structural Behaviour and Energy Efficiency of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Processes like Additive Manufacturing.

The book presents an integrated planning concept for heat flows in production systems comprising various short term and long term related models. Detailed explanations about the modeling and implementation of all relevant system elements such as generic and specific machines types, technical building services (TBS), production planning and control aspects, heat storage units and (waste) heat designs follow. Due to resulting amounts of data, the concept foresees system level appropriate indicators and visualizations for a facilitatedevaluation of the model results. An application procedure embeds and describes all models as well.Three exemplary application cases demonstrate the applicability, including the manufacturing of shafts for automotive transmissions, a cooling water system and an academic learning environment.

Mithilfe der Bionik wurden im Laufe der vergangenen Jahre einige erfolgreiche Neuentwicklungen durchgeführt. Wäre die Bionik aber auch für Fabriken sinnvoll? Könnten diese in Zukunft wie Muscheln, Bienenwaben oder Spinnennetze aussehen? Ein Großteil der heutigen Planungsansätze für Fabriken erzeugt zwar gute Lösungen für eine bestimmte Aufgabenstellung, sobald es aber zu Änderungen wie z.B. Produktneueinführungen, Neuzubauten etc. kommt, wird die Fabrik plötzlich suboptimal. Schaut man in die Natur, findet man aber Systeme die sich an kurz- und langfristige Änderungen anpassen. Und natürliche Systeme wachsen aber in einer Weise, dass alle involvierten Elemente während des Wachstums ohne Störung weiterfunktionieren. Die vorliegende Dissertation zeigt, dass mithilfe der Bionik sowohl Prinzipien als auch Designansätze in der belebten Schöpfung zu finden sind, die bei der Entwicklung von neuartigen Fabriklayouts angewendet werden können, so dass Fabriken sich zukünftig besser an Veränderungen anpassen können. In einer der Fallstudien konnten durch ein bionisch inspiriertes Verfahren 43,5% der Kosten im Vergleich zur Original-Fabrik eingespart werden.

Das interdisziplinäre Entwicklungsmanagement spielt in der produzierenden Industrie eine signifikante Rolle. Durch Erfassung aller Einflussfaktoren aus dem Logistikmanagement sowie dem Produktionsmanagements auf die technische Layoutplanung von Transfersystemen werden Vorgehensweisen zur Berechnung, Klassifizierung und Bewertungen entwickelt, welche in Kennzahlenform verfügbar gemacht werden. Diese wiederum finden Verwendung im Projektmanagement im Rahmen der Auswahl und Optimierung von Transfersystemen in der Mikrolayoutplanung. Der beschriebene Planungs- und Entwicklungsschritt ist dem der Makrolayoutplanung vorgelagert, beeinflusst diesen ebenso und ermöglicht eine bidirektionale Betrachtung. Hierdurch wird die Möglichkeit geschaffen, eine Auswahlstrategie für die Entwicklung und Planung eines Gesamttransfersystems zu generieren, welche im technischen Projekt- und Entwicklungsmanagement Anwendung finden kann.
