Mit diesem Handbuch liegt erstmals ein umfassendes Namen- und Begriffslexikon der frühneuzeitlichen Gelehrtenkultur vor. Es besteht aus einem Bio-Bibliographischen Repertorium (Bd. I) zu den wichtigsten Autoren zwischen dem 15. und 18. Jahrhundert (von Thomas Abbt bis Zwingli) und einem (noch in Vorbereitung befindlichen) Glossar (Bd. II), mit konzisen Artikeln zu Zentralbegriffen der Gelehrtenkultur der Frühen Neuzeit, z. B. ars conversandi, disputatio, theologia naturalis, Zwinglianismus usw. Unter Gelehrtenkultur wird der Lebens- und Gesellschaftsbereich verstanden, in denen der Gelehrte eine bedeutende Rolle spielt bzw. der für ihn von Bedeutung ist. Im Vordergrund der Dokumentation stehen sowohl Kategorien, Termini und Bezeichnungen der mentalen und theoretischen als auch der sozialen und materiellen Kultur. Die Sachbereiche umfassen sowohl Lehre und Wissenschaft (Schulen, Fakultäten der Universität, Kirche, Jurisprudenz, Medizin usw.) als auch die Alltagskultur (Hof und Stadt, Haus und Garten, Freunde und Familie, Reisen, Schreiben und Lesen usw.).

Das Handbuch bietet insgesamt etwa 23 exemplarische, zum Teil sehr umfangreiche Abhandlungen zu Diskursen und Themenkomplexen der Gelehrten- und Wissenschaftskultur der Frühen Neuzeit (15.-18. Jh.), die in dieser Epoche zwischen Mittelalter und Moderne maßgeblich und orientierend gewesen sind. Gemeinsam ist den Beiträgen die Nähe zu den historischen Quellen und deren breite Dokumentation. Die einführende und problemorientierte Darstellung überwiegt gegenüber philologischen Spezialinteressen. Dem Charakter seiner Beiträge nach ist das Handbuch deshalb gleich weit entfernt von einem Lexikon und von einer Sammlung von Einzelstudien. Zu den behandelten Diskursen gehören Petrarkismus, die Ciceronianismus-Debatte und Probleme des Kunstvergleichs, Konfessionalisierung und Konversion, Mythographie, Psychagogik und die Geschichte der Gelehrtenrepublik und des Streits zwischen 'antiqui' und 'moderni', jüdische Religionsphilosphie und christliche Kabbala, der Weg des Deutschen zur Wissenschaftssprache, Paracelsismus und Medizin, Paläontologie Alchemie und Magie, Rhetorik und Dialektik, die Frage der Ur- und Universalsprachen, die frühe Hermeneutik und Theorien der Politik im Anschluß an Machiavelli. Jeder Beitrag zeichnet den jeweiligen Diskurs in seinen Varianten, Protagonisten und seinem geschichtlichen Verlauf nach. Insgesamt wurden sechs Rubriken berücksichtigt: 1. Renowned German social historian Heide Wunder refers to the cosmic image contained in the 1578 Book of Marital Discipline that characterizes the relationship between husband and wife. Today, "He is the sun, she is the moon" might be interpreted as a hierarchy of dominance and subordination. At the time it was used, however, sun and moon reflected the different but equal status of husband and wife. Wunder shows how the history of women and the history of gender relations can provide crucial insights into how societies organize themselves and provide resources for political action. She observes actual circumstances as well as the normative rules that were supposed to guide women's lives. We learn what skills were necessary to take charge of households, what people ate, how they furnished their homes, what birth control measures were available, what role women played in peasant protest. Wunder finds that, in addition to the history of losses and setbacks for women observed by so many current interpreters, there is a history of gains as well. The regency of noble women was normal, as was the shared responsibility of wife and husband in a peasant household, an artisan's workshop, or a merchant's business. Using sources as diverse as memoirs, wedding and funeral sermons, novels, and chronicles, and including a wealth of demographic information, Wunder reveals a surprising new image of early modern women and provides a richer interpretation of early modern Europe.

History is one of the most important cultural tools to make sense of one’s situation, to establish identity, define otherness, and explain change. This is the first systematic scholarly study that analyses the complex relationship between history and religion, taking into account religious groups both as producers of historical narratives as well as distinct topics of historiography. Coming from different disciplines, the authors of this volume ask under which conditions and with what consequences religions are historicised. How do religious groups employ historical narratives in the construction of their identities? What are the biases and elisions of current analytical and descriptive frames in the History of Religion? The volume aims at initiating a comparative historiography of religion and combines disciplinary competences of Religious Studies and the History of Religion, Confessional Theologies, History, History of Science, and Literary Studies. By applying literary comparison and historical contextualization to those texts that have been used as central documents for histories of individual religions, their historiographic themes, tools and strategies are analysed.
