Dem Verzeihen wird seit einiger Zeit vermehrt Beachtung geschenkt. In der Philosophie, Rechts- / Politikwissenschaften, Theologie und Psychologie/Psychotherapie fällt dabei der Name Hannah Arendts zumeist so, dass ihre Auffassung des Verzeihens eher verdunkelt denn erhellt wird. Daher bedarf es einer gründlichen Untersuchung ihres Verständnisses des Verzeihens, das erst durch den Bezug auf ihr Gesamtwerk deutlich wird. Die sich ergebende Skizze einer Theorie des Verzeihens tritt dann in ein Gespräch mit der philosophischen und interdisziplinären Debatte über das Verzeihen ein. Denn zum einen erlaubt Arendts Verzeihensbegriff nicht nur die Abgrenzung von den üblichen Verwechslungen (Entschuldigung, Nachsicht, Duldung u.a.) und den Vereinnahmungsversuchen, denen Arendt ausgesetzt ist, sondern auch die Unterscheidung von Strafe, Amnestie und Begnadigung. Zum anderen werden Verbindungen zwischen Arendt und Derrida, Kodalle, Ricœur und Spaemann sichtbar. Und es lassen sich die Lücken in ihrer Skizze durch die wechselseitige Erhellung in jenem Gespräch so schließen, dass eine arendtsche Theorie des Verzeihens greifbar wird. Dabei ist es das Gespräch mit Ricœur, das zur Bestimmung des arendtschen Verzeihens als versprechendes Verzeihen führt. Ihre These vom Verzeihen und Versprechen als dem Handeln innewohnenden Heilmitteln für die aporetische Verfasstheit des Handelns wird durch das versprechende Verzeihen so korrigiert, dass Letzteres der Aporetik des Handelns nicht entgeht, aber doch die ausgezeichnete Weise bleibt, mit der Erfahrung des Scheiterns praktischer Selbstbestimmung umzugehen, die nicht allein auf das Vergangene schaut, sondern zugleich Zukunft eröffnet, ohne ein Heilmittel für jenes Scheitern sein zu können.

This volume is the documentation of a workshop at the "Dietrich Bonhoeffer Centre for Public Theology" in Kigali, that took place in February 2018 and discussed what can be gained from Bonhoeffer's theology for contextual theologies in Africa as well as in Europe. The core feature of the workshop in February 2018 was a competition in which students from Butare/Huye presented the findings of their examination of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life and work. In current debates about coming to terms with individual and collective wrongdoing, the concept of forgiveness has played an important but controversial role. For a long time, the idea was widespread that a forgiving attitude — overcoming feelings of resentment and the desire for revenge — was always virtuous. Recently, however, this idea has been questioned. The contributors to this volume do not take sides for or against forgiveness but rather examine its meaning and function against the backdrop of a more complex understanding of moral repair in a variety of social, circumstantial, and cultural contexts. The book aims to gain a differentiated understanding of the European traditions regarding forgiveness, revenge, and moral repair that have shaped our moral intuitions today whilst also examining examples from other cultural contexts (Asia and Africa, in particular) to explore how different cultural traditions deal with the need for moral repair after wrongdoing.

Die Studie schlägt am Beispiel Ruandas vor, gesellschaftliche Versöhnungsmaßnahmen als Wegbereitung zu verstehen, die hoffend auf die transformative Kraft des Letzten wartet und handelnd darauf antwortet. Public Theology in the Context of Social Reconciliation Processes] In the case of »Transitional Societies«, theology and the church face enormous challenges in the process of overcoming violence and achieving sustainable peace. The paradigm of reconciliation as a central perspective of public theology can offer orientation for social institutions as well as the churches. The churches are faced with the task of taking into account not only the interpersonal but also the vertical dimension of reconciliation, which asks about God as an actor in the reconciliation process, and to bring this into the public discourse. Using the example of Rwanda, the study proposes to understand social reconciliation measures as a preparation of the way, which waits in hope for the transformative power of the Last and responds to it in action.
