Excerpt from Hannibal's March Through the Alps Polybius had received the education of a statesman and a soldier, and his intimacy with Scipio led to his accompanying that general in the campaigns against Carthage and against Numantia, in which it is believed that he rendered some service as an engineer. He wrote his history for the purpose of explaining to his Greek countrymen how Rome had come to be the mistress of the world. In pursuit of the information which he required he travelled widely, and in particular made the journey across the Alps in order to follow and to see for himself the route that had been taken by Hannibal. He says that he had had the opportunity of inquiring about the events of the march from men who had taken part in it. His residence in Rome began half a century after the march, and he was then between thirty-one and forty-one years old. He may very well have had the opportunity of discussing the events of 218 with Carthaginians who had accompanied Hannibal, with Greek officers who had been on his staff, and with Romans who had taken part in the operations against him. As he wrote he had before him the accounts of earlier authors, some of whom were Roman, and one probably a Greek. In point of time he stood to the events of 218 as a man who was born in 1871 would stand to the Crimean War. Livy wrote a century and a quarter after Polybius. Hannibal is acknowledged to be one of history's greatest generals, and his crossing of the Alps - complete with elephants - to make war against Rome on its home soil is legendary. But even Hannibal met his match in Scipio, and ultimately Carthage was defeated by the rising power of Rome. In Hannibal's War, J. F. Lazenby provides the first scholarly account in English since 1886 solely devoted to the Second Punic War - what some have called the first "world war" for mastery of the Mediterranean world. By closely examining the accounts of Livy and Polybius, supplemented with the fruits of modern research, Lazenby provides a detailed military history of the entire war as it was fought in Italy, Spain, Greece, and North Africa. This edition includes a new preface covering recent research on Hannibal's war against Rome.

When he left his Spanish base one spring day in 218 B.C. with his 100,000-man army of mercenaries, officers, and elephants, Hannibal was launching not just the main offensive of the Second Punic War but also one of the great military journeys in ancient history. His masterful advance through rough terrain and fierce Celtic tribes proved his worth as a leader, but it was his extraordinary passage through the Alps—still considered treacherous even by modern climbers—that made him a legend. John Prevas combines rigorous research of ancient sources with his own excursions through the icy peaks to bring to life this awesome trek, solving the centuries-old question of Hannibal's exact route and shedding fresh light on the cultures of Rome and Carthage along the way. Here is the finest kind of history, sure to appeal to readers of Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire: alive with grand strategy, the clash of empires, fabulous courage, and the towering figure of Hannibal Barca.

Abraham Lincoln raved that this series of historical biographies gave him "just that knowledge of past men and events which I need. I have read them with the greatest interest. To them I am indebted for about all the historical knowledge I have." Considered what we would now call "young adult" literature, this collection, first published between 1848 and 1871, was designed to present a clear, distinct, connected narrative of the lives of the great figures of world history, those people who have been most influential, at least as American author and educator JACOB ABBOTT (1803-1879) saw it from his 19th-century perspective. Wildly popular and republished many times under different collected names, this replica set mimics the 1904 reprint known as the "Makers of History" series. It will delight students of history as well as show the scholar how history telling has changed over the last few centuries. More than 30 other volumes in the series are also available from Cosimo Classics. This volume, dating from 1849, covers legendary military commander Hannibal (248- c. 183 Be, from the First Punic War through his famous crossing of the Alps to the destruction of Carthage.
