This book presents an overview of the work of Swiss photographer Hans Danuser over the last 35 years and places it in wider artistic and social contexts. At the end of the 1970s Danuser substantially contributed to the "reinvention" of photography as an artistic medium and shaped its development through the myriad possibilities of the analogue darkroom. In 1980 Danuser began his breakthrough cycle "IN VIVO," whose 93 black-and-white photos address taboos then prevailing in the research and power centers of industrial society in Europe and the USA prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the break-up of power blocs and the rise of globalization. Topics that influence and transform society have been the focus of Danuser's subsequent large-format, and often site-specific installation works. With an emphasis on content and media-specific research, Danuser's photos furthermore examine light in all its subtle nuances--from black to white, its deep shadows and transitional gray areas.

Hans Danuser leistete Ende der 1970er-Jahre einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur "Neuerfindung der Fotografie" als künstlerisches Medium und prägte deren Entwicklung bis in die letzten Winkelzüge der analogen Fotografie. 1980 begann Hans Danuser mit seinem Zyklus "IN VIVO". Die 93 Schwarzweiss-Fotografien thematisieren Tabubereiche in Forschungs- und Machtzentren der damaligen industriellen Gesellschaft Europas und der USA vor dem Mauerfall in Berlin, als die alten Machtblöcke aufzubrechen begannen und die Globalisierung einsetzte. Themen, welche die Entwicklung unserer Gesellschaft beeinflussen und verändern, beschäftigten Hans Danuser auch in seinen nachfolgenden großformatigen, oft raumbezogenen und installativen Werken. Dabei verstand er seine Arbeit immer sowohl inhaltlich motiviert als auch als medienspezifische Forschungsarbeit. Seine Fotografien untersuchen das Licht in den feinsten Nuancen zwischen Schwarz und Weiss, die Schattenbereiche, Übergänge und Grauzonen. Die Publikation bietet einen Überblick über das Schaffen von Hans Danuser der letzten 35 Jahre und zeigt sein fotografisches Werk in einem grösseren Zusammenhang.

Darkroom charts the physical and psychic terrain of photographic printing rooms while conveying their transition from the realm of pure functionality into historical artifact.
