Why didn't the German people know about the concentration camps during World War II ? This is just one historical question addressed in this personal narrative by Saltzwedel, who as a teen watched the war unfold and served in the Hitler Youth organization. Looking back with this journal, however, Saltzwedel provides some interesting personal observations. The book also includes many photos. Saltzwedel opens the tale with a fascinating description of his family, which serves as an essential backdrop to the coming events. He was reared in Stettin, the former capital of the province of Pomerania. His family included wealthy industrialists and honored military men, but they were not members of the Nazi Party. Although the author describes his life as a Hitler Youth, "Hans' Journal" is fascinating because it is not another war tale of battles, heroism, villainy and slaughter. The book's strength is its simplicity, an account of everyday life among civilians in wartime Germany, told in a conventional tone. Yes, obviously the rise and fall of the Third Reich ultimately had a great impact on the young Saltzwedel and his family. However, it is this personal perspective of the Third Reich - a German perspective - that helps enlighten readers, providing a better understanding of the people who endured World War II.

First published in 1955 in German, this journal, published here in English for the first time, describes the adventures of a young Swiss surgeon who sought his fortune in eighteenth-century Russia, where he eventually made his mark and rose to a high position. The journal covers his journey to Southern Russia and his service there during the campaigns of 1770-74, and gives a day-by-day account of his trip through Siberia to the Chinese borders as a surgeon assisting a recruiting officer. Fries’ simple, straightforward and fresh narrative provides a vivid, human introduction to the little-known land and people of Siberia. In contrast to the more scientific specialist works of other eighteenth-century discoverers in Siberia, Fries’ account conveys the special lure of the country, with lively descriptions of the ordinary life of its inhabitants, of the town and countryside, of nature, people, customs and impressions. Their travels took the two companions through all of Siberia to the very borders of China, and we gain a valuable glimpse of the relations between Russians and Chinese at the time. Along the way we also meet numerous westerners whom a strange fate had brought to this isolated, enigmatic land. To Fries’ text is added a wide-ranging introduction by Professor Kirchner, which gives an account of the pioneering foreign scientists and tourists who travelled in Siberia during the century following the death of Peter the Great in 1725. The work of the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect Hans van der Laan (1904–1991) offers important insights into the ways in which artifacts address the complexity of human physical, cognitive, and social needs. Van der Laan developed a number of powerful lines of thought, three of which are introduced here: the search for a theory of architecture; the establishment of a three-dimensional system of proportions named Plastic Number; and analogy as the mainspring of human thinking. This triad of deeply interconnected intellectual strategies represents his most important ‘instruments of thought’ and is rooted in the careful observation of phenomena as they are presented to us rather than relying on conventional beliefs. Van der Laan's instruments of thought lead us to reconsider the origins of human creation, urging a deeper examination of our perceptual and cognitive response to the limitlessness of the surrounding environment. On this basis, Van der Laan develops a unique philosophy of culture and design that includes considerations on the relationship between nature, culture, and religious ritual. Although this book is informative, its principal aim is to be formative.
