One of the founders of modern human biology and physical anthropology, Gabriel W. Lasker holds a well-established place in the history of science. In a classic article published in Science in 1969, Lasker advanced the idea of plasticity, the process of human adaptation to stressful environments by a series of modifications to the body during the course of physical growth and development. This concept was a factor that led the scientific community to give up its reliance on the notion of genetically fixed racial types. As he documents the rapidly changing field of anthropology and some of its leading figures, Lasker gives his readers a peek inside the lives of people who have defined what it means to be human -- and one of those people is himself.

After the atomic bombing at the end of World War II, anxieties about survival in the nuclear age led scientists to begin stockpiling and freezing hundreds of thousands of blood samples from indigenous communities around the world. These samples were believed to embody potentially invaluable biological information about genetic ancestry, evolution, microbes, and much more. Today, they persist in freezers as part of a global tissue-based infrastructure. In Life on Ice, Joanna Radin examines how and why these frozen blood samples shaped the practice known as biobanking. The Cold War projects Radin tracks were meant to form an enduring total archive of indigenous blood before it was altered by the polluting forces of modernity. Freezing allowed that blood to act as a time-traveling resource. Radin explores the unique cultural and technical circumstances that created and gave momentum to the phenomenon of life on ice and shows how these preserved blood samples served as the building blocks for biomedicine at the dawn of the genomic age. In an era of vigorous ethical, legal, and cultural debates about genetic privacy and identity, Life on Ice reveals the larger picture—how we got here and the promises and problems involved with finding new uses for cold human blood samples.

Trial Technique And Evidence written by Michael R. Fontham and has been published by Aspen Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-28 with Law categories.

Evidence and Trial Advocacy are often taught as if in practice; the topics are not related. The original edition of this title pioneered the concept that instruction on trial technique and evidence rules in the same volume is an effective way to teach either an evidence or trial advocacy course. This combination provides students with the foundation for becoming skilled trial advocates within the boundaries of the rules of evidence. Trial Technique and Evidence explains the purpose and application of each evidence rule. The practical methods of presenting evidence are balanced against the requirements of the rules. Indeed, many evidence rules are "practice" rules, either not covered in the formal rules of evidence or not addressed in detail. The basis for introducing demonstrative exhibits, for example, is not included in the federal rules, and impeaching witnesses in trial requires knowledge of practical technique. Trial Technique and Evidence allows a professor to incorporate practical requirements with evidence theory. The text also includes practical steps for compliance with the rules, with examples to facilitate the student's understanding, and addresses recent developments such as: • Jury persuasion • Application of rules to electronic evidence • Trends in applying the Daubert factors for assessing expert testimony • Amendments to the Federal Rules of Evidence

This volume offers a new conceptual framework for exemplification, a coherent theoretical approach based on contemporary psychological models of information processing, and an exhaustive integration of the pertinent research demonstrations. Focus is on the news media, but the influence of fiction and quasi-fiction is also considered. The informational competition between concrete, verbal, or pictorial exemplification and abstract, mostly quantitative exposition is analyzed. Implications for issue perception, including delayed consequences are also examined. Exemplification is subjected to conceptual scrutiny and a new theoretical framework is offered. Contemporary psychological paradigms are applied to predict effects of various forms of exemplification. Perhaps most important, novel experimental research is presented to document the specific consequences of exemplifications featured in the news, even of those featured in fiction. Finally, recommendations for information providers and recipients are derived from the research demonstration in order to advance media literacy specific to exemplification. This unique volume: * provides a comprehensive account of the power of case-report selection in the manipulation of perceptions of social issues, * addresses exemplification in communication, i.e., the influence of case reports in the news media, primarily, on the perception of pertinent social issues, * offers an empirical assessment of the practice of issue exemplifying by the media, * gives an exhaustive account of representative research on exemplification effects on issue perception--primarily by the news media, but also by the entertainment media, and * includes a compilation of guidelines for information providers and recipients in efforts at creating media literacy with regard to exemplification.

This story is the first of a trilogy. Synopsis. 47,000 words. Main characters Billy – He is young, energetic and confident. Saskia – She arrives on Samoa with a secret brought from Germany. She has a family commitment to marry a German officer, but doesn't want to marry him. Billy and Saskia fall in love. Dieter von Schmidt - the bad person in the story. Saskia is obliged to marry von Schmidt. Loto – the Samoan boy with an overwhelming curiosity for European people. Otto and Jennifer – Billy's relatives already living on Samoa before Billy arrives. The year is 1914. The month is August. The place is German Samoa. The distance is thousands of miles away from the turmoil of Europe. The British man is Billy, who is leaving the German colony and his friends to fight for king and country. Samoa Detachment is a story about rubber plantation owners living thousands of miles away from Europe in early 1914, until the patriotism, fervour and violence of Europe in the summer of 1914 inevitably reaches the German Pacific colony. Billy, Saskia (Billy's German girlfriend), Jennifer (Billy's Australian cousin) and Otto (Jennifer's German half-brother and Billy's friend) dream of an expanding rubber plantation on the island of Upolu near Apia, German Samoa, but events in Europe in the summer of 1914 devastate their plans. They fight a personal war against the violent German officer, Dieter von Schmidt, before the world war begins, and Samoa Detachment explores the distinction between a private war against von Schmidt, and Billy's experience of world war against unknown people to him in Europe. Most of this story is set in German Samoa, and a small number of chapters are set in France. Samoa Detachment examines globalisation at the beginning of the 20th century, and this historical fiction intertwines with real events in Europe when war in Europe means war for the world.
