Explores the nature and role of wisdom in education. Modern scholarship has struggled to come to terms with the meaning of wisdom and its significance in the field of education. This book examines the importance of pursuing wisdom in schools by turning to ancient and medieval sources for clarification concerning the nature of wisdom. Sean Steel argues that our current emphasis on the development of rigorous critical-analytic thinking skills, on assessment, and on accountability in education has negatively impacted the ability of schools to foster an environment in which both students and teachers might pursue wisdom. Although in recent times efforts have been made to incorporate the pursuit of wisdom into schools through Philosophy for Children (P4C) and contemplative education programming, such initiatives have missed their mark. Steel therefore recommends not more accountability in education for the purpose of ensuring global competitiveness, but rather the institutional promotion of periods of leisure or schole in the school day. Drawing upon his own experiences as a teacher who has tried to encourage students to search for wisdom, the author discusses some of the challenges and pitfalls of wisdom seeking. He also offers examples of various wisdom-seeking activities that might bear fruit in the classroom.

Since the beginning of time, people have searched for happiness and have amassed many and varied opinions on how it is found. Only recently has empirical science devoted extensive research to questions such as: Is happiness within our control? What role does God play in making people happy? How do I close the gap between where I want?Drawing from the latest scientific and psychological research on the quest for happiness, The Law of Happiness reveals that the spiritual truths of the Bible hold the secrets to the happiness we desire. As Dr Henry Cloud unpacks theseuniversal, eternal principles, he reveals that true happiness is not about circumstances, physical health, financialsuccess, or even about the people in our lives. In other words, it's not about the factors that are frequently beyond our control. Rather, happiness is found in choosing to become the kind of people God created us to be. With chapter titles like 'Happy People Connect', 'Happy People Are Envy-Free' and 'Happy People Forgive', Dr Cloud shows just how happiness is achieved as he sets readers on a pathway of spiritual transformation that connects them with the God of the universe. With these new tools, readers will discover that their relationships, their careers and their inner selves are infused with the joy they've been seeking.

Every culture rests on a bedrock of folk wisdom handed down through generations. The pronouncements of philosophers are homespun by our grandmothers, and find their way into our common sense: what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Happiness comes from within. But are these 'truths' really true? Today we all seem to prefer to cling to the notion that a little bit more money, love or success will make us truly happy. Are we wrong? In The Happiness Hypothesis, psychologist Jonathan Haidt exposes traditional wisdom to the scrutiny of modern science, delivering startling insights. We learn that virtue is often not its own reward, why extroverts really are happier than introverts, and why conscious thought is not as important as we might like to think... Drawing on the rich inspiration of both philosophy and science, The Happiness Hypothesis is a remarkable, original and provocative book - ancient wisdom in our time.

Happiness and Wisdom contributes to ongoing debates about the nature of Augustine's early development, and argues that Augustine's vision of the soul's ascent through the liberal arts is an attractive and basically coherent view of learning, which, while not wholly novel, surpasses both classical and earlier patristic renderings of the aims of education.

With clear, simple prose, and poetic turns of phrase, this inspirational collection of quotations reflects the unique country of Bhutan and its universal embrace of compassion, understanding, and kindness. Some of the quotes are also a bit quirky and funny—why not? After all, this remarkable little kingdom in the Eastern Himalayas just may hold the secret to lifelong happiness. Renowned for their government edict that “gross national happiness is more important than gross national product,” the Bhutanese grounding in Buddhist ideals suggests that material and spiritual development should occur side by side—something we can forget too often. So dive into this inspiring collection of wisdom, proverbs, and general sage advice to help you on your own road to happiness—or at least put a smile on your face. Although, as the Bhutanese saying goes, You don’t have to smile if you are pleased, nor do you have to frown if you are displeased. People who do this don’t get so many wrinkles! One dream cannot rest on two pillows. Evil words are like poisonous flowers. Evil actions are like poisonous roots. It is more important to have good teeth in your head than a hat which fits properly on it. Just as there are green fertile pastures and barren plains, the same is true for the territory of the heart and mind. If you take the jungle away from a free, roaming snow leopard it will feel like a poor street dog. So give the gift of happiness today!

It examines the different definitions of happiness in relation to wisdom traditions and the impact of these traditions on current research. It explores topics such as the pursuit of a good life, the pursuit of eudaimonia and the meaning of economic and social suffering from the perspective of the social sciences. It further discusses how the social sciences can meet people’s aspirations towards a world of higher well-being in our time, and what the future challenges are. Creating The Good Life written by James O'Toole and has been published by Rodale Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-05-06 with Self-Help categories.

Professionals and business people in midlife are increasingly asking themselves "what's next?" in their careers and personal lives. Creating the Good Life draws on the wisdom of the ages to help contemporary men and women plan for satisfying, useful, moral, and meaningful second halves of their lives. For centuries, the brightest people in Western societies have looked to Aristotle for guidance on how to lead a good life and how to create a good society. Now James O'Toole--the Mortimer J. Adler Senior Fellow of the Aspen Institute--translates that classical philosophical framework into practical, comprehensible terms to help professionals and business people apply it to their own lives and work. His book helps thoughtful readers address some of the profound questions they are currently struggling with in planning their futures: • How do I find meaning and satisfaction? • How much money do I need in order to be happy? • What is the right balance between work, family, and leisure? • What are my responsibilities to my community? • How can I create a good society in my own company? Bridging philosophy and self-help, O'Toole's book shows how happiness ultimately is attainable no matter one's level of income, if one uses Aristotle's practical exercises to ask the right questions and to discipline oneself to pursue things that are "good for us." The book is the basis for O'Toole's new "Good Life" seminar, where thoughtful men and women gather to create robust and satisfying life plans.
