"The Priority Programme 1630 "Harbours from the Roman Period to the Middle Ages" funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) from the years 2012-2018 involved 18 projects working on the interdisciplinary research on the phenomenon 'harbour'. After the first 3-year period an international conference titled 'Harbours as objects of interdisciplinary research - Archaeology + History + Geosciences' was held in Kiel in 2015. This volume includes 26 papers from lectures of the conference in which participants from 15 nations present their work approaches and results on harbour research within the five sections 'Plenum Keynotelectures', 'Geophysics and Field Research: Developing Methods', 'Geoarchaeology: Changing Harbour Environments', 'Archaeological Features: Harbour Facilities and Infrastructure' and 'Written and Iconographic Sources: Complementing the Material Evidence'. The book describes in detail the findings of five seasons (2008-2012) of survey and excavation in Port Joli, and ten years of laboratory analysis, undertaken by the Canadian Museum of History, in collaboration with Acadia First Nation. It also incorporates data recovered from previous archaeological work conducted in Port Joli by Erskine, Raddall, Millard, and others, providing a complete synthesis of one of Nova Scotia’s richest Indigenous archaeological records. Reviving the art of a traditional archaeology “site monograph”, the work provides a complete presentation of all the archaeological information recovered, including full-colour artifact plates, technical drawings, profiles, and maps, in addition to a complete data description and synthesis. The final chapter presents a culture history of the Port Joli, summarizing how the “pretty harbour” became a central place for Mi’kmaq prior to the arrival of Europeans. The Langstone Harbour Archaeological Survey Project was founded to undertake a detailed investigation of a large, shallow marine inlet on the southern coast of England. This volume outlines the results of work carried out between 1993 and 1998 when a broad range of inter-disciplinary investigative techniques were employed: fieldwalking, GPS survey, auger survey, limited excavations, underwater geophysical survey and excavation. A history of the physical development of the harbour as well as the populations that lived in the vicinity and exploited its resources, is given, from the earliest evidence in the Mesolithic and Neolithic, to the Bronze Age Urnfield cemetery, salt production in the Roman period, through to more recent changes and ecological and environmental threats to the survival of this area.
