London L. Gore is a World War II veteran serving front-line duty in a Sherman tank with the 5th Armored Division after the Utah Beach landing. Living through the shelling on the battlefield was like being in a never-ending thunderstorm surrounded by unrelenting lightning strikes. After the war, London returned to the Carolinas and worked at timbering and right-of-way clearing. He met and married Ellen and settled in Sumter, South Carolina. Their marriage of fi fty-one years produced two wonderful daughters, four grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ellen passed in 2003 of natural causes. London remarried and he and his current wife, Mary, reside in Shallotte, a small community in southeastern North Carolina. In this book, he shares a lifetime of memories from childhood to present to include many of his wartime experiences of World War II.

A no-man’s land through which raiding armies frequently passed, Loudoun County, Virginia, was itself a land of divided loyalties—one in three voters rejected secession in 1861—but with each new regiment came strengthened resolve to salvage their shattered lives despite defeat and military occupation. In this look at Loudoun County’s role in the Civil War, historian Stevan Meserve narrates not only the large-scale fighting at Ball’s Bluff in 1861 and in the Loudoun Valley cavalry battles of 1863, but also the lives of the citizens who sacrificed their crops and livestock, cared for the wounded and buried the dead of storied regiments such as White’s Comanches, Cole’s Potomac Home Brigade, Mosby’s Rangers and the Independent Loudoun Rangers. Drawing upon military accounts and other historical documents, The Civil War in Loudoun County celebrates their eventual triumph and the vibrant communities that exist today.

Hard Times written by Tom Clark and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-12 with Business & Economics categories.

2008 was a watershed year for global finance. The banking system was eventually pulled back from the brink, but the world was saddled with the worst slump since the 1930s Depression, and millions were left unemployed. While numerous books have addressed the financial crisis, very little has been written about its social consequences. Journalist Tom Clark draws on the research of a transatlantic team led by Professors Anthony Heath and Robert D. Putnam to determine the great recession’s toll on individuals, families, and community bonds in the United States and the United Kingdom. The ubiquitous metaphor of the crisis has been an all-encompassing “financial storm,” but Clark argues that the data tracks the narrow path of a tornado—destroying some neighborhoods while leaving others largely untouched. In our vastly unequal societies, disproportionate suffering is being meted out to the poor—and the book’s new analysis suggests that the scars left by unemployment and poverty will linger long after the economy recovers. Politicians on both sides of the Atlantic have shown more interest in exploiting the divisions of opinion ushered in by the slump than in grappling with these problems. But this hard-hitting analysis provides a wake-up call that all should heed.

Joe Louis written by Randy Roberts and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-26 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A “humbling, inspiring . . . deeply emotional” biography of the boxing legend who held the heavyweight world championship for more than eleven years (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Known as the Brown Bomber, Joe Louis defended his heavyweight title an astonishing twenty-five times. Through the 1930s, he got more column inches of newspaper coverage than President Roosevelt. At a time when the boxing ring was the only venue where black and white could meet on equal terms, Louis embodied Black America’s hope for dignity and equality. And in 1938, his politically charged defeat of German boxer Max Schmeling made Louis a national hero on the world stage. Through meticulous research and first-hand interviews, acclaimed biographer Randy Roberts presents a complete portrait of Louis and his outsized impact on sport and country. Digging beneath the simplistic narratives of heroism and victimization, Roberts reveals an athlete who carefully managed his public image, and whose relationships with both the black and white communities—including his relationships with mobsters—were deeply complex. “Roberts is a fine match with his subject. He supports with powerful evidence his contention that Louis’s impact was enormous and profound.” —The Boston Globe
