Everybody's entitled to his own opinion, right? WRONG!! He or she is entitled to an informed opinion-so if you don't like being argued with, if you don't like a total stranger telling you that your opinion is stupid, and you're fulla crap, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! Because this guy never learned how to lie, and he is either adored or printed on hate posters in Cheney's office, Ku Klux Klan dens, schlock producers¿ bathrooms, and those idiot sites on the internet that truckle to ultra-maroons.

Herein lies in written form Harlan Ellison’s Movie, the full‐length feature film Ellison created when a producer at 20th Century‐Fox said, “If we gave you the money, and no interference, what sort of movie would you write?” Well, that producer is no longer at the studio; he left the entire venue of moviemaking after Harlan Ellison’s Movie was seen by the Suits. There is no use even trying to describe what the film is about, except to confirm the long‐standing rumor that it contains a scene in which a 70‐foot‐tall boll weevil chews and swallows an entire farmhouse and silo on‐camera. (It is Scene 33C.)

This follow-up to Ellison's 1989 Stoker Award-winning book of film (and by extension, cultural) criticism picks up precisely where its predecessor left off: with the 35th installment-dated July 1989-of his column in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION, and continues through his 50th entry, written for this volume in September 2014. But wait, there's more: buy now, and at no extra cost, you'll get three pieces of twenty-first century film criticism bringing the collection bang -up-to-date, as well as a long-lost assessment of PSYCHO that predates even the 1965 entries in HARLAN ELLISON'S WATCHING; if that's not value for money, we don't know what is. Did I mention the stunning Overton Loyd cover? The Harlan Ellison's Watching columns included are: From 1989: Installment 35: In Which the Phantasmagorical Pales Before the Joys of the Mimetic Installment 36: In Which, Darkly and Deliciously, We Travel From Metropolis to Metropolis, Two Different Cities, Both Ominous Installment 37: In Which Not Only is No Answer Given, But No One Seems to Know the Question to Ask Installment 38: In Which, Though Manipulated, We Acknowledge That Which All Men Seek From 1990: Installment 39: In Which We Hum a Merry Tune While Waiting for New Horrors, New Horrors Installment 40: In Which We Scrutinize the Sedulousness to Their Hippocratic Oath of Troglodytic, Blue, Alien Proctologists Installment 41: In Which an Extremely Nervous Fool with His Credentials Taped to His Forehead Tacks Trepidatiously Between Scylla and Charybdis Knowing that Angels and Wise Men Would Fear Even to Dog-Paddle This Route Installment 42: In Which It Waddles Like a Duck, Sheds Water Like a Duck, and Goes Steady With Ducks, But Turns Out to be a Tortoise Installment 43: In Which We Lament, "There Goes the Neighborhood!" Installment 44: In Which the Good Ship Coat-Tail-Ride Sinks, Abandoning Hundreds in Treacherous Waters From 1991: Installment 45: In Which Tempus Fidgets, Fugits, and Inevitably Omnia Revelats Installment 46: In Which We Bend So Far Over Backwards To Be Unbiased That You Can See The Nose Hairs Quiver With Righteousness Installment 47: In Which Artful Vamping Saves the Publisher $94.98 From 1994: Installment 48: In Which the Wee Child's Icons are Demeaned From 1995: Installment 49: In Which the Old Man of the Sea Bites the Head off Yet Another Chicken From 2014: Installment 50: In Which the Playroom of the Prodigal Gives One Last Gasp Pre-dating Ellison's column in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, ENDLESSLY WATCHING collects a review of PSYCHO from a 1960 fanzine, 1974's "Total Impact: THE TERMINAL MAN," and Ellison's 1966 treatise on terror: "3 Faces of Fear," making its debut in a non-fiction Ellison collection. Bridging the nearly two decades between Watching columns are: 2007's "I Saw GHOST RIDER Today at the Galleria," and 2013's review of 12 YEARS A SLAVE and "Death to All Hollywood Award Shows!" As an added bonus, we've exhumed two unpublished reviews...or, rather, one unpublished review of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA and an unpublished refusal to review HONEY, I BLEW UP THE BABY.

Like Odysseus to the sirens' song, Harlan Ellison-that hero of many a myth-was pulled time and again to television, that femme fatale of storytelling mediums that offered up a chance for the writer to get a hunger for Sally Field that led to a lust-inspired romp with The Flying Nun, strip Anne Francis down to a bearskin in an unproduced Honey West and to bump off a fashion mogul in noir style for his Burke's Law swansong. Add a long-lost Twilight Zone short-based on Ellison's story "Gnomebody"-and the treatment for Two from Nowhere-another Ellison creation that failed to find a spot on the airwaves-and this beauty is worth being broken on the rocks. BID FAREWELL TO AMOS BURKE: Ellison's tenure at Burke's Law came to a fashionable close with a murder set in Los Angeles's garment district and a silent guest spot by Hollywood legend Buster Keaton. READ WHAT ABC'S CENSOR NEVER WANTED YOU TO SEE: The shadow of Adrian Samish eclipsed a number of Ellison scenarios destined for ABC's airwaves. "Honey Goes Ape " is another casualty, one that would have seen Anne Francis's eponymous Honey West donning a bearskin to protect a wealthy heiress from assassination by one or another member of her Charles Addams-inspired family. SEE HOW FAR ELLISON WILL GO FOR A DATE: As has been well documented, Ellison wrote an episode of The Flying Nun expressly to get to Sally Field. While he never realized his carnal designs, his auctorial intent can at last be appreciated with the publication of both his treatment and teleplay for "You Can't Get There from Here," a story that hit the airwaves with the dreaded Cordwainer Bird credited as its author. JOIN ELLISON IN EXILE AS HE ATTEMPTS TO UPLIFT MANKIND: Two from Nowhere, an unproduced network television treatment from the late 1970s, follows Kert-an extradimensional prince endowed with extraordinary abilities-to our Earth, where-in a dramatic series with a conscience-he would have helped guide humanity toward a better way while eluding forces from Erewhon bent on his capture. The thirteen-page synopsis is followed by seven pages of script that establish the premise, an eleven-page treatment of the first episode, five initial story premises, and four more created later in the series's doomed development. DISCOVER TWO LOST EXCURSIONS INTO THE TWILIGHT ZONE: Ellison's 1997 collection SLIPPAGE documented his departure from the 1985 incarnation of The Twilight Zone due to CBS's abortion of his disturbing Yuletide directorial debut, "Nackles," but what wasn't widely known was that his exodus pulled the plug on an adaptation of the author's 1956 fantasy "Gnomebody," exhumed herein. When Ellison returned to the syndicated Zone in the late 1980s, he submitted two storylines. One, "Crazy as a Soup Sandwich," was produced, but the other-"Love Amid the Ruins"-had been kicking around since the 1970s, when Ellison used part of the premise as the basis for his Logan's Run episode "Crypt" (in BRAIN MOVIES, Volume 5). The four-page premise for that tale-which Ellison still hopes to realize one way or another-makes its debut here.

The Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author probes topics ranging from departed pets to Lenny Bruce and San Quentin in this provocative collection of essays. A major collection of Harlan Ellison’s incomparable, troublemaking, uncompromising, confrontational essays and newspaper columns, The Harlan Ellison Hornbook mines deep into the author’s colorful past. Failed love affairs, departed pets, a defense of comic books—in lesser hands, these subjects would be pabulum or treacle. When Harlan Ellison is behind the typewriter, the mundane becomes an all‐out intellectual brawl. Emotionally moving and verbally stimulating, these columns cannot be missed, especially Ellison’s article on controversial comedian Lenny Bruce or the chilling account of the author’s trip to visit a death row inmate in San Quentin State Prison.

Designed as both an introduction to Harlan Ellison's vast body of work and as a manual for would-be writers, Harlan 101 collects the best of the author's short fiction, seven essays on the craft of writing, and a collection of rarely seen oddities from Ellison's extensive archives. This 400-page paperback features: An introduction by New York Times bestseller Neil Gaiman, author of the Hugo Award-winning novels American Gods and The Graveyard Book, and creator of Vertigo Comics' Sandman series. The first appearance in a widely available Ellison collection of his newest short story-the 2011 Nebula Award-winning "How Interesting: A Tiny Man." Five Hugo Award-winning short stories, including "'Repent, Harlequin ' Said the Ticktockman," "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream," "The Deathbird," "Jeffty Is Five," and "Paladin of the Lost Hour." "Snake in the Crypt"-The never-before-republished story that Ellison rewrote to become "The Deathbird." See how this average tale was re-worked into a Hugo Award-winning novelette. The lost ending to "Paladin of the Lost Hour"-This ending only appeared in the very first publication of the short story in the 1985 anthology Universe 15; it has never been reprinted. A disturbing and, as-yet, unfinished short story titled "Pet." Seven informative, yet entertaining essays on the craft of writing (four which have never appeared in an Ellison collection). Plus sixteen other stories-some subtly revised for this publication-spanning Ellison's career. From the 1950s comes "The Sky is Burning." The 1960s are represented by "All the Sounds of Fear" and "Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes." The Ellison of the 1970s appears in "At the Mouse Circus," "Basilisk," "Hindsight: 480 Seconds," "The Man Who Was Heavily Into Revenge," "Shatterday," "Shoppe Keeper," and "Strange Wine." The 1980s offerings include "Broken Glass," "Grail," "On the Slab," and "Prince Myshkin, and Hold the Relish," while the 1990s bring forth "The Man Who Rowed Christopher Columbus Ashore" and "Sensible City."

An essential collection of short stories and essays from the multi-award-winning author of Deathbird Stories. “Arguably the best and most prolific author of novellas and novelettes that Anglophone letters has produced.” —Norman Spinrad, author of Bug Jack Barron, from his Foreword Despite the awards and accolades that categorize Harlan Ellison as a science fiction writer, his canon of work spans a diverse range of categories across fiction and nonfiction. He is, first and foremost, a writer of the human condition, whether he’s richly imagining characters’ experiences and adventures or commenting on the foibles and follies of those he had the misfortune to meet and observe. Over the Edge brings together ten of Ellison’s stories and three of his essays. From a sheriff’s ignoble end in an Old West town to a conspiracy on the steel beams of a construction site and an astronaut’s lonely existence and descent into madness, Ellison’s fiction resides in a genre of his own creation. Meanwhile, his commentary about topics such as writing for Star Trek and interactions with fans captures real human behavior more bizarre and horrifying than anything his imagination can conjure. Includes: “Pennies, Off a Dead Man’s Eyes,” “The End of the Time of Leinard,” “3,” “Faces of Fear: An Essay,” “Blind Lightning,” “Walk the High Steel,” “Shadow Play,” “The Words in Spock’s Mouth: An Essay,” “From a Great Height,” “Night Vigil,” “Xenogenesis: An Essay,” “Rock God,” “Ah-Wegh Thogha,” “Ernest and the Machine God”
