Volume 10 of the Series contains the consensus document on the “Environmental Considerations for Risk/Safety Assessment for the Release of Transgenic Plants” developed by the OECD Working Party on the Harmonisation of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology. Transgenic plant varieties are subject to official risk/safety assessment, science-based and case-by-case, before their potential release into the environment.

Food systems around the world face a triple challenge: providing food security and nutrition for a growing global population; supporting livelihoods for those working along the food supply chain; and contributing to environmental sustainability. Better policies hold tremendous promise for making progress in these domains.

Volume 8 of the Series contains the first biosafety 'consensus document' to deal with the biology of an insect, the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Issued by the OECD Working Group on the Harmonisation of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology, the science-based consensus documents collate information for use during the regulatory risk assessment of biotechnology products, i.e. transgenic organisms (plants, animals, micro-organisms) when intended for release in the environment. Ae. aegypti mosquito is vectoring yellow fever, dengue, Zika and Chikungunya diseases in tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide. Biotechnological applications are developed to control the mosquito population and reduce virus transmission. The book provides information on Ae. aegypti taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, reproductive biology, genetics, ecology, interactions with other species and the environment. The mosquito effects on human and animal health, and the control strategies/specific programmes to limit its development are also summarised.

Regulation Of Genome Editing In Plant Biotechnology written by Hans-Georg Dederer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-16 with Law categories.

This book provides in-depth insights into the regulatory frameworks of five countries and the EU concerning the regulation of genome edited plants. The country reports form the basis for a comparative analysis of the various national regulations governing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in general and genome edited plants in particular, as well as the underlying regulatory approaches. The reports, which focus on the regulatory status quo of genome edited plants in Argentina, Australia, Canada, the EU, Japan and the USA, were written by distinguished experts following a uniform structure. On this basis, the legal frameworks are compared in order to foster a rational assessment of which approaches could be drawn upon to adjust, or to completely realign, the current EU regime for GMOs. In addition, a separate chapter identifies potential best practices for the regulation of plants derived from genome editing.

Genome Edited Plants written by Shiv Sanjeevi Sripathi and has been published by Delve Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The concept of domesticating plants dates back to ancient times with initial dependence on natural changes and later approaches using mutagenesis. In order to address the issue of food insecurity due to population demands, decrease in arable land (due to excessive human interference) and climate change, the concept of "gene editing" is being pursued among the slew of approaches by researchers. This book comes at a time given that the year 2020 was ten years since the use of homing endonucleases and zinc finger nucleases to produce the first gene-edited plants. The year 2012 saw the emergence of CRISPR/Cas9, which subsequently altered the arena of gene editing to receive "The Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2020." The book concisely summarizes the concept of genome editing and its relevance in plants along with the approach, as described by research. Latest developments in approaches along with case studies and examples of genome editing have been elucidated. Further, the current scenario of the regulatory checklists across several countries concerning genome-edited plants has also been presented to enable a reader to gain a complete picture.

The Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations, culminating in the GATT Secretariat being transformed into the World Trade Organization (WTO) on 1 January 1995, has altered forever the process of quarantine policymaking by national governments. On the one hand, WTO member countries retain the right to protect the life and health of their people, plants and animals from the risks of hazards such as pests and diseases arising from the importation of goods. On the other hand, the WTO's Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (the SPS Agreement) requires that quarantine measures be determined in a manner that is transparent, consistent, scientifically based, and the least trade-restrictive. This collection resulted from an international workshop funded and organised by Biosecurity Australia, the agency of government responsible for analysing Australia's quarantine import risks and for negotiating multilateral SPS rules and less restrictive access to overseas markets for Australian produce. The workshop, which was held at the Melbourne Business School on 24-25 October 2000, brought together a distinguished group of applied economists and quarantine policy analysts whose focus involves regions as disparate as Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and New Zealand, in addition to Australia.
