Popular science at its most exciting: the breaking new world of chronobiology - understanding the rhythm of life in humans and all plants and animals. The entire natural world is full of rhythms. The early bird catches the worm -and migrates to an internal calendar. Dormice hibernate away the winter. Plants open and close their flowers at the same hour each day. Bees search out nectar-rich flowers day after day. There are cicadas that can breed for only two weeks every 17 years. And in humans: why are people who work anti-social shifts more illness prone and die younger? What is jet-lag and can anything help? Why do teenagers refuse to get up in the morning, and are the rest of us really 'larks' or 'owls'? Why are most people born (and die) between 3am-5am? And should patients be given medicines (and operations) at set times of day, because the body reacts so differently in the morning, evening and at night? The answers lie in our biological clocks the mechanisms which give order to all living things. They impose a structure that enables us to change our behaviour in relation to the time of day, month or year. They are reset at sunrise and sunset each day to link astronomical time with an organism's internal time.

Profound progress has been made in the fields of chronobiology and psychobiology within the past decade, in theory, experiment and clinical application. This volume integrates these new developments on all levels from the molecular, genetic and cellular to the psycho social processes of everyday life. We present a balanced variety of research from workers around the globe, who discuss the funda mental significance of their approach for a new understanding of the central role of ultradian rhythms in the self-organizing and adaptive dynamics of all life processes. The years since the publication of Ultra dian rhythms in physiology and behavior by Schultz and Lavie in 1985 have seen a burgeoning realization of the ubiquity and importance of ultradian rhythms within and between every level of the psychobiological hierarchy. The experimental evidence lies scattered through a disparate litera ture, and this volume attempts, albeit in a highly selective manner, to bring together some of the different strands. The editors are very conscious of the omission of many important current aspects; e.g. we have not included any of the fascinating and indeed long and well-established experiments with plants (Bunning 1971, 1977; Guillaume and Koukkari 1987; Millet et al. 1988; 10hnsson et al. 1990) that are widely regarded as having initiated the whole field of chronobiology (De Mairan 1729). Neither have we reviewed recent developments on glycolytic oscillations, since a great deal of the seminal work was already completed by 1973 (Chance et al. 1973).

In this book, leading experts in the field review how circadian rhythms impact the brain. An essential function of mammalian life is the exploitation of the regularities provided by the 24-hour cycle of day and night. The development and evolution of circadian clock mechanisms have allowed us to optimally adapt our behavior and physiology to the external world. Not surprisingly, a growing body of evidence links the disruption of circadian rhythms by genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors to illnesses of the brain. In the first section of the book, readers will learn about the molecular and anatomic architecture of circadian function in mammals. The ways in which environmental disruptions and misalignments can influence such mechanisms and therefore impair brain function and health status are also addressed. In the second part, the focus shifts to those brain regions responsible for brain function and the body-wide regulation of circadian function. Amongst others, special attention is paid to the role of astrocytes and the brain’s reward and hyprocretin / orexin systems. The book concludes with an extensive discussion on the consequences of circadian rhythm dysfunction. Several chapters present the latest findings on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, drug abuse and mood disorders. Written by auhorities in the field, the book provides a state-of-the-art review of the latest findings on circadian clocks in the brain and highlights their potentially far-reaching impacts on our health and well-being. As such, it is essential reading for all neuroscientists and clinicians seeking to understand the intricate connections between circadian rhythms and brain health and illness.

Even our bodies adhere to many cycles, with the beating of our heart and our breath rising and falling. Within us, unbeknownst to most, even more intricate biological rhythms profoundly orchestrate our physiology across timescales from hours to years. These biological rhythms evolved over eons to optimize our functioning and health, but modern life often profoundly disrupts them. Realigning our lifestyles and environments to these innate human rhythms provides an as-yet under-recognized opportunity for enhancing healthspan, improving society, and enriching the human condition. This book aims to illuminate the workings and remarkable importance of biological rhythms in an accessible way, while providing practical guidance to translate this knowledge into lifestyle wisdom that empowers your best self. We have come to a point scientifically where personalized chronomedicine founded upon each individual's unique rhythms is transitioning from a far-off vision into an achievable reality, presaging a revolution in how we prevent, detect and treat disease. These pivotal times call for expanding public awareness so we can collectively harness the tremendous potential of chronobiology while advocating for innovative policies that will accelerate progress. Our bodies are symphonies of rhythms. Beneath the hum of life's busy motion, inside the cells of every tissue, molecular oscillations mark time's passage like the world's smallest beating drums. These cellular pulses resonate across scales into larger biological waves – cycling hormones coursing day and night, electrical brain storms waxing and waning, silent marrow churning out blood's metronomic tempo. We are creatures not of static Being, but of Becoming – beings built upon change, growth and decay. Yet unlike random chaos, the change that shapes us flows in patterns anchored deep within our genetic code. Our rhythms of activity and rest, waking and sleeping, eating and fasting, learning and forgetting, sensing and responding have all evolved to turn in sync with the predictable cycles of our spinning planet. Circadian we are, and Ultradian too. But modern life has led us astray. We doused night with artificial light, ate at odd hours, filled waking moments with distraction, turned days into endless work, and mistook convenience for progress. In banishing nature’s rhythms, we damaged our innate temporal order. We disrupted healthy oscillations once harmonized through epochs past. Now we suffer mounting ills. Yet latent within our cells, the ancient rhythms persevere. To flourish, we need but realign: Dim electric nights, welcome natural dawns, move, feast, and rest in moderation. Timing is medicine. The body heals in rhythm, thrives in rhythm. And so might we. This book charts a course back into flow with nature’s temporal patterns. Here lies the fruit of chronobiology – illuminating our biological heritage to live timely. Master these cycles, and transform your days. Peak performance, robust health, and deep meaning emerge from within. Come. Let us synchronize our lives anew.

An eye-opening handbook from a leading Ayurvedic physician that blends cutting-edge science on "clock genes" with ancient eastern wisdom to help us understand how to harness the power of chronobiology to effortlessly lose weight, sleep better, exercise stronger, reduce stress, and boost our wellbeing. "It’s not you, it’s your schedule." Does it sound like magic? It’s not. We’ve all heard of circadian rhythms—those biological processes that give us jet lag and make us night owls or early birds. But few of us know just how profoundly these diurnal patterns affect our overall health. Bad habits like skipping meals, squeezing in workouts when it’s convenient, working late into the night to maximize productivity and then trying to "catch up" on sleep during the weekend disrupt our natural cycles. A growing body of research on chronobiology reveals just how sensitive the human body is to these rhythms all the way down to the genetic level. Our "clock genes" control more than we realize, and small changes can make the difference between battling our bodies, and effortlessly managing weight, sleep, stress, inflammation, and more. Marrying ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with the latest scientific research, Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar’s holistic step-by-step 30-day plan gives you the tools—and the schedule—you need to transform your life. With diagnostic quizzes to determine your specific mind-body type, you will learn to adapt you schedule for effortless wellness for life.
