He was a pillar of the community, serving on local committees, donating prizes to the rugby club, organising charity collections. His patients thought the world of him: he was attentive, kind, never too busy to chat. Yet Dr Harold Frederick Shipman was also the most prolific serial killer the world has ever known, with between 200 and 300 victims. Quietly, for many years, the small, bespectacled GP was making unexpected house calls - and walking out leaving a dead body behind. The murderous career of Dr Shipman only came to an end when police in Hyde, Greater Manchester, were called to investigate a forged will. Overnight, they found themselves embroiled in the biggest murder case in British history. Substantially revised and updated since Shipman's suicide in prison, this is a compelling account of these monstrous crimes and of the man who committed them. The authors have had unparalleled access to friends, colleagues and patients. Their in-depth and authoritative investigation looks at how he killed, how he was able to get away with it for so long, and - most important of all - why.

The story of Dr Harold Shipman, an English GP who began killing his patients as a junior doctor and continued to do so for more than 20 years is a fascinating one. Shipman injected his patients with lethal doses of diamorphine, a medical form of heroin, in the privacy of their own homes and then sat and watched them until they were dead. This usually occurred within minutes. Afterwards, he would commiserate with relatives, offering words of sympathy and then simply continue on his rounds, as if killing patients was part of the normal routine of any GP. Sixteen years after he made legal history as the first British doctor convicted of murdering his patients, we are really none the wiser as to why he murdered an estimated 250 of his patients, the majority of whom were elderly but active women living independent lives in their own homes. This book attempts to address the many unanswered questions in the Shipman story. If none of the usual motives associated with murderers was present, how then do we account for his acts? What was it about a particular patient that resulted in them becoming one of Shipman's victims? Why did he forge the Grundy will and in such a crude way? Why was his defence in court so ludicrous? What might have prompted him to hang himself?

This is the shocking story of a doctor who was addicted to murder: a man who wickedly abused the trust of his patients with horrifying results. He was a pillar of the community: attentive, kind, never too busy to chat. Yet behind this charming facade lay Britain's most prolific serial killer, with at least 200 victims. Small, bespectacled Dr Shipman was making house calls - and then committing murder with bloodcurdling expertise and professionalism. He saw himself as playing God. This sensational book looks behind the man and reveals how, throughout his 25-year campaign of evil, Shipman continued to be a doting husband and father, trusted and adored by the majority of his patients. Evil Beyond Belief looks at how he was able to get away with murder for so long and - most important of all - why he was driven by a twisted, insatiable lust for death. It also looks at the events leading up to Shipman's suicide and examines the effect that this dramatic event had on the families of his numerous victims.

Harold Shipman: Doctor Death: The Shocking Case of the Harold Shipman MurdersAs a society, we are conditioned to believe that doctors will do their utmost to nurture our well-being, and protect our lives. We implicitly trust that people only go into such professions to care for their patients in a loving and attentive manner. Very few of us would suspect that someone claiming to promote our health would not do everything in their power to ensure our survival; and even fewer of us would suspect that someone whose job it is to keep us safe, would actively want to harm us. That blind trust is exactly the mentality that led to over 200 people being murdered at the hands of Britains most prolific serial killer, Doctor Harold Fredrick Shipman. Shipman used the trust of his patients as a weapon against them. He managed to avoid detection as a murderer for almost 30 years by putting on a convincing performance as a conscientious care giver. He would persuade a victims family that he had his patients best interests at heart, even after he had injected their loved one with a lethal opiate overdose, and had watched them die.

Harold Shipman is one of the UK's most notorious and prolific serial killers, and in this meaty book, David Holding analyses court and police transcripts, reports and statements, and the text of the Shipman Inquiry, while discussing chronological events, system failures, media coverage, and the 'nature versus nurture' debate so beloved by those seeking to understand aberrant human behaviour. The author's legal experience and analytical thought processes are clearly in play throughout this fascinating book.
