Instead of following the common method of spreading music, we have made use of musical signs, repeats, &c., in such a manner as to afford the most music for the least pos sible space: and we know of no work of the same size which contains such a. Large number and variety of tunes. Second. We have consulted the tastes of youth generally; in.the selection of melodies, in providing a liberal supply of chorus tunes, also in the introduction of pictures. The intro duction of plates in a musical work is truly a novel feature, yet it is believed, that all who examine them will admit that they are of a character to add interest to the work, and deepen the impressions made by the music and poetry. Third. The collection of dialogues in song has been pre pared with care, and will doubtless be hailed by teachers and scholars as an important acquisition in their preparation for exhibitions, &c. Fourth. Some of the music, and much of the poetry is original, and the greater part of the remainder has been ar ranged expressly for this work. Fifth. In the writing and selection of songs no pains have been spared to introduce such sentiments as tend to elevate the morals, refine and purify the affections, win youth into the paths of knowledge, virtue, and piety; and at the same time render the composition of a lively and pleasing char acter. Excerpt from Harp Music: A Digest Classified Alphabetically and in Grades According to Degrees of Difficulty It was natural that as the mechanism of the harp was perfected, the players became ambitious to write, and at first, their efforts produced results more brilliant than musical. The exquisite color of the harp tone gave it a place of its own in orchestral composition and the great creative minds, from Ber lioz and Wagner down to the present day, havemade frequent and characteristic use of it. As a realization of its possibilities, as a vehicle of musi cal expression developed, many of the serious, crea tive artists have contributed fine examples of their art in solo and ensemble writing, thereby giving to harp music a dignity and character it needed. There are many compositions to suit all tastes, but it is my purpose to point out only the music of most worth, to student, teacher and player. To this end, I have carefully graded the entire contents of this work, using seven grades to denote the de grees of difficulty. The books of instruction, studies and etudes are in a section by themselves, with the exception of concert etudes which are listed in the alphabetical catalogue. Concerted pieces using harp as a basis are also independently classified. If there are any omissions, it is because the pieces were out of stock during the periods over which my work extended, and not because of intention. It was im possible to pass judgment on every entry, also there would be many differences of opinion as to the rela tive value of the material. Excerpt from Musical Instruments: With Numerous Woodcuts Music, in however primitive a stage of development it may be with some nations, is universally appreciated as one of the Fine Arts. The origin of vocal music may have been coeval with that of language; and the construction of musical instruments evidently dates with the earliest inventions which suggested themselves to human ingenuity. There exist even at the present day some savage tribes in Australia and South America who, although they have no more than the five first numerals in their language and are thereby unable to count the fingers of both hands together, nevertheless possess musical instruments of their own contrivance, with which they accompany their songs and dances. Wood, metal, and the hide of animals, are the most common substances used in the construction of musical instruments. In tropical countries bamboo or some similar kind of cane and gourds are especially made use of for this purpose. The ingenuity of man has contrived to employ in producing music, horn, bone, glass, pottery, slabs of sonorous stone, - in fact, almost all vibrating matter. The strings of instruments have been made of the hair of animals, of silk, the runners of creeping plants, the fibrous roots of certain trees, of cane, catgut (which absurdly referred to the cat, is from the sheep, goat, lamb, camel, and some other animals), metal, &c.
