In this engaging tale, Honda Katsuichi reconstructs the life of an Ainu woman living on the northern island of Japan over five hundred years ago. Harukor's story, created from surviving oral accounts of Ainu life and culture as well as extensive scholarly research, is set in the centuries before the mainland Japanese nearly destroyed the way of life depicted here. In the first person, the fictional Harukor tells us of her childhood, her adolescence, and her motherhood, drawing on tales and songs performed by her grandmother and other bards. She describes festivals, weddings, childbirth and midwifery, traditional healing methods, battles, and funerals in detail. Her story is followed by the adventures of her oldest son, Pasekur, which end by foreshadowing an early Ainu rebellion against Japanese encroachment. Amply illustrated and prefaced by an extensive introduction to Ainu history, the natural surroundings, and the sources used to construct Harukor and her world, this volume is a unique portrait of Ainu gods and humans, of matters sacred and mundane, and of the distinctive Ainu respect for nature's bounty.

It's called "the Event." An unimaginable cataclysm in the 23rd century shatters 600 years of the Earth's timeline into jumbled fragments. Our world is gone: instantly replaced by a new one made of shattered remnants of the past, present and future, all existing alongside one another in a nightmare patchwork of different time "shards"—some hundreds of miles long and others no more than a few feet across. An alliance is formed: San Diego native Amber Richardson, the young warrior Cam, the supercilious Victorian Phineas Van Seldoot, Blake—a soldier from World War II, the 1880's reporter Nelly Bly, and "Merlin, and who claims to be the time-travelling 23rd century scientist responsible for the Event. Together they reach Merlin's laboratory at the South Pole, only to discover a vortex where the doomsday machine should be. If they enter the vortex, they may find a way to restore time. Or they may die in the chaos of extra-dimensional space.

The Conquest Of Ainu Lands written by Brett L. Walker and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with History categories.

This model monograph is the first scholarly study to put the Ainu--the native people living in Ezo, the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago--at the center of an exploration of Japanese expansion during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the height of the Tokugawa shogunal era. Inspired by "new Western" historians of the United States, Walker positions Ezo not as Japan's northern "frontier" but as a borderland or middle ground. By framing his study between the cultural and ecological worlds of the Ainu before and after two centuries of sustained contact with the Japanese, the author demonstrates with great clarity just how far the Ainu were incorporated into the Japanese political economy and just how much their ceremonial and material life--not to mention disease ecology, medical culture, and their physical environment--had been infiltrated by Japanese cultural artifacts, practices, and epidemiology by the early nineteenth century. Walker takes a fresh and original approach. Rather than presenting a mere juxtaposition of oppression and resistance, he offers a subtle analysis of how material and ecological changes induced by trade with Japan set in motion a reorientation of the whole northern culture and landscape. Using new and little-known material from archives as well as Ainu oral traditions and archaeology, Walker poses an exciting new set of questions and issues that have yet to be approached in so innovative and thorough a fashion.

"The Indigenous Experience: Global Perspectives is the first book of its kind. In attempting to present the reader with some of the richness and heterogeneity of Indigenous colonial experiences, the articles featured in this provocative new volume constitute a broad survey of Indigenous Peoples from around the globe. Examples are drawn from the North American nations of Canada and the United States; the Hispanic nations of Latin America; Australia; New Zealand; Hawaii and Rapanui from Oceania; from Northern Europe and the circumpolar region, Norway; and from the continent of Africa, an example from Nigeria. The readings focus on the broader issues of indigeneity in globalization; the book is organized by universal themes that stretch across national and geographic boundaries: The processes of colonization that include conquest, slavery, and dependence ; Colonialism, genocide, and the problem of intention ; Social constructs, myths, and criminalization ;The ongoing struggle to attain social justice, self-determination, and equity."--pub. desc.
