This book tells the story of Allen and Julie's first breakup, which takes place in the summer of 1961 after a Riverdale Youth Club outing to the beach where new guy, Victor Morgan, likes Julie. But Julie likes both Victor and Allen. To complicate matters, Julie's friend Sarah likes Victor. And Julie's Momma doesn't like Victor! After Allen and Julie's first breakup in the summer of 1961, they "wasted" an entire school year making each other miserable, as evidenced by the esoteric short stories Julie wrote during that time. They got back together in the summer of 1962 for a brief time. Then Allen went away to boarding school while Julie stayed at Highview Academy. Their "long-distance relationship" worked--sort of--until the spring of 1963. The setting is a Christian youth gathering in Beach City in April 1963 where Allen and Julie break up for the second time. During this special weekend, Julie meets the "marvelous" Bill Johnson who becomes a good friend, but never quite a boyfriend, though she always wished he would be.

From baby pictures in the cloud to a high school's digital surveillance system: how adults unwittingly compromise children's privacy online. Our children's first digital footprints are made before they can walk—even before they are born—as parents use fertility apps to aid conception, post ultrasound images, and share their baby's hospital mug shot. Then, in rapid succession come terabytes of baby pictures stored in the cloud, digital baby monitors with built-in artificial intelligence, and real-time updates from daycare. When school starts, there are cafeteria cards that catalog food purchases, bus passes that track when kids are on and off the bus, electronic health records in the nurse's office, and a school surveillance system that has eyes everywhere. Unwittingly, parents, teachers, and other trusted adults are compiling digital dossiers for children that could be available to everyone—friends, employers, law enforcement—forever. In this incisive book, Leah Plunkett examines the implications of “sharenthood”—adults' excessive digital sharing of children's data. She outlines the mistakes adults make with kids' private information, the risks that result, and the legal system that enables “sharenting.” Plunkett describes various modes of sharenting—including “commercial sharenting,” efforts by parents to use their families' private experiences to make money—and unpacks the faulty assumptions made by our legal system about children, parents, and privacy. She proposes a “thought compass” to guide adults in their decision making about children's digital data: play, forget, connect, and respect. Enshrining every false step and bad choice, Plunkett argues, can rob children of their chance to explore and learn lessons. The Internet needs to forget. We need to remember.

TEEN VOGUE BOOK CLUB PICK • A Harvard freshman becomes obsessed with her schizophrenic brother’s suicide. Then she starts hearing voices. “A rich, intricately plotted thriller . . . Serritella, who is a Harvard grad herself, writes about the campus with an insider’s savvy.”—Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post “Every time I thought I knew where Ghosts of Harvard was heading, I turned out to be wrong. Part mystery, part ghost story, part psychological thriller, this novel is all entertainment.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult Cadence Archer arrives on Harvard’s campus desperate to understand why her brother, Eric, a genius who developed paranoid schizophrenia took his own life there the year before. Losing Eric has left a black hole in Cady’s life, and while her decision to follow in her brother’s footsteps threatens to break her family apart, she is haunted by questions of what she might have missed. And there’s only one place to find answers. As Cady struggles under the enormous pressure at Harvard, she investigates her brother’s final year, armed only with a blue notebook of Eric’s cryptic scribblings. She knew he had been struggling with paranoia, delusions, and illusory enemies—but what tipped him over the edge? Voices fill her head, seemingly belonging to three ghosts who passed through the university in life, or death, and whose voices, dreams, and terrors still echo the halls. Among them is a person whose name has been buried for centuries, and another whose name mankind will never forget. Does she share Eric’s illness, or is she tapping into something else? Cady doesn’t know how or why these ghosts are contacting her, but as she is drawn deeper into their worlds, she believes they’re moving her closer to the truth about Eric, even as keeping them secret isolates her further. Will listening to these voices lead her to the one voice she craves—her brother’s—or will she follow them down a path to her own destruction?

What happens when the students at America's oldest university enter the world's oldest profession? The Student Body is the smartest, sexiest beach book of the year, written by four Harvard graduates who are as diverse as their characters. Harvard University can be a menacing place. Academic pressure is intense. Attitude reigns. Racial and sexual politics create a minefield. Toni Isaacs, a gutsy young Harvard student who reports for the campus paper, can handle that--usually. This smart black woman works hard, knows how to dress, and won't back down in a fight. Covering a story for the Harvard Crimson, Toni receives a tip: Harvard students--both men and women--are working as prostitutes. Determined to make her mark, Toni finds herself drawn into Boston's sexual underworld, where she encounters strippers, johns, escorts, vice cops, a stash of student sex diaries, and an MBA candidate with a very unusual business plan. Toni's investigation ineluctably draws in some of her closest friends, who find their own worlds spinning out of control. This Mod Squad for the nineties stumbles across a scheme that jeopardizes much more than their academic futures and will have readers of this compulsive page-turner wondering just who the real prostitutes at Harvard are. Filled with unforgettable characters, mordant wit, and steamy details, The Student Body is written with the sly intelligence and authenticity that only true Harvard graduates can provide. The Student Body is the ultimate campus thriller, a gripping tour de force of suspense and social commentary that gives new meaning to the idea of getting into Harvard.

Harvard Square written by Catherine J. Turco and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-28 with Business & Economics categories.

“Harvard Square isn’t what it used to be.” Spend any time there, and you’re bound to hear that lament. Yet people have been saying the very same thing for well over a century. So what does it really mean that Harvard Square—or any other beloved Main Street or downtown—“isn’t what it used to be”? Catherine J. Turco, an economic sociologist and longtime denizen of Harvard Square, set out to answer this question after she started to wonder about her own complicated feelings concerning the changing Square. Diving into Harvard Square’s past and present, Turco explores why we love our local marketplaces and why we so often struggle with changes in them. Along the way, she introduces readers to a compelling set of characters, including the early twentieth-century businessmen who bonded over scotch and cigars to found the Harvard Square Business Association; a feisty, frugal landlady who became one of the Square’s most powerful property owners in the mid-1900s; a neighborhood group calling itself the Harvard Square Defense Fund that fought real estate developers throughout the 1980s and ’90s; and a local businesswoman who, in recent years, strove to keep her shop afloat amid personal tragedy, the rise of Amazon, and a globalizing property market that sent her rent soaring. Harvard Square tells the crazy, complicated love story of one quirky little marketplace and in the process, reveals the hidden love story Americans everywhere have long had with their own Main Streets and downtowns. Offering a new and powerful lens that exposes the stability and instability, the security and insecurity, markets provide, Turco transforms how we think about our cherished local marketplaces and markets in general. We come to see that our relationship with the markets in our lives is, and has always been, about our relationship with ourselves and one another, how we come together and how we come apart.
